The four were regarded as special very early on, ~ 200 AD, and while this was later codified, it's very well established by Christian scholars even looking back today that the four are legit and the others have problems.

I'm actually familiar with the link you gave and give it great weight - there is more to discuss here but it doesn't sound like it would be useful. I would just close by saying you ought to read your own link.
