SARATOGA SPRINGS -- U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, announced a new commission Tuesday charged with promoting the Saratoga National Historical Park, the site where Americans turned back the British in 1777 during the American Revolution. Advertisement
The battlefield has been taken for granted, Sweeney said at a lunch at the Holiday Inn hosted by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.
"We have not done enough to develop one of the most historic sites in the country," Sweeney said.
Julie Stokes, former deputy commissioner of the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, will lead the as-yet-unnamed commission as chairwoman. Stokes also chairs Saratoga PLAN, a Saratoga Springs-based conservation group.
Sweeney said he wants to see statues of the battles and draw private money and endowments to the national park.
Assemblyman Roy J. McDonald, R-Wilton, proposed adding $350,000 to the state budget to buy property along Route 4 where British Lieutenant-General John Burgoyne handed over his sword to Major General Horatio Gates. Gov. George Pataki vetoed the proposal, but the Legislature voted to override his veto.
The park service estimates 250,000 people visit the battlefield when it is open between June and October each year

Ah, yes... it brings back memories of a near fatal bike crash. My hubby neglected to tighten my front wheel and I rode the very hilly terrain for 3/4 trip until my wheel fell off.
Beautiful park, great vistas especially in the fall.

I was just up that way this week on business and saw the sign on the freeway. I thought of stopping by to see the battlefield, but now I'm glad I didn't since it wasn't open.
