Three state senators called Wednesday for the ouster of University of California President Robert Dynes over a pay-perk controversy that has roiled the prestigious public research institution.
Sens. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, and Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, called on Dynes to resign at a news conference in Sacramento.
In a related move, Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, called UC Regents Chairman Gerald Parsky and asked him to fire Dynes.
``Dynes still doesn't get it,'' Denham said in a statement. ``While at times, he has been a good cheerleader for the UC, he has been a horrible manager. He seems to think he is running Enron, but the UC is a public institution supported by tax dollars. Greed, arrogance and ignorance sum up the attitude that is pervasive in the UC President's office.''
All three senators sit on the Senate Education Committee, which held a series of hearings into UC compensation in February, shortly after media accounts detailed millions in bonuses, stipends and other perks that were paid to top administrators without approval by UC's governing board. The deals were also kept hidden from the public.
A series of internal and external audits released in the past three weeks have also blasted UC compensation practices. Tuesday, the California State Auditor said UC administrators had frequently bent the rules in order to offer better deals to top administrators. UC spent $334 million last fiscal year on stipends, bonuses, housing allowances and other costs, in addition to the $8.9 billion it spent on base salaries.
Dynes and Parsky are expected to release statements later today.
In past interviews, both men admitted mistakes in UC's past handling of compensation issues and vowed reform. Dynes has already instituted a number of changes to tighten UC pay policies.
In February, Dynes side-stepped a question asking whether he felt his job was at risk.
``My goal is to fix this,'' Dynes told reporters after a Feb. 22 Senate Education Committee hearing. ``My goal is to work with the regents to fix the practices of this university.''
Maybe his idea of fixing this is finding more secure ways to keep such info hidden from the public. Obviously it was encrypted well enough.
The greatest tragedy in American history wasn't Vietnam or 9/11, it was when we kicked God and the Bible out of public education in 1962. All we have to show for it is a cesspool of corruption and socialism.
Dynes should be fired and every dollar received that was not approved should either be paid back or that individual also fired.
The guy is confused. He thinks he's a senator
