Illegal immigrants crossing the Arizona desert in will have to worry about being apprehended by one more law enforcement agency.
A posse of 100 volunteers and deputies with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will be assigned to patrol the desert and main roadways in the southwest area of the county and arrest illegal immigrants, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a news release.
The effort is an attempt to slow the tide of illegal immigrants into the county, Arizona's most populous, according to the release.
"There are so many illegals trying to make it into the county that it's overwhelming my deputies," Arpaio said.
The sheriff's office began arresting illegal immigrants in March under a new state smuggling law. Under the law, as interpreted by Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, illegal immigrants can be arrested and prosecuted for conspiracy to smuggle themselves into the country.
Arpaio's deputies have arrested some 120 illegal immigrants under the law, which has yet to be tested in court.
The law's authors have said they intended it to be used to prosecute smugglers, not the immigrants being smuggled.
Now if Cochise County's Sheriff Deaver would get with the program of Sheriff Joe.
Sheriff Joe: "Alright, deputies. We got laws need enforcin'. Go enforce them."
I wish one individual in Congress had the guts of Sherrif Joe. He was talking about gettin' some possies together. I always wanted to join a possie. Hmmmm......
Errrr...
The AP admits that these people are being smuggled into our country, but in the same sentence they still call them "immigrants". Note to the AP, immigrants aren't smuggled into the U.S., they enter legally. With outright lies such as calling the invaders "immigrants", the liberal media are complicit in the invasion. The enemy within.
I am not hopeful Yuma County Sheriff Ogden would ever consider anything like this, he never met a Federal Dollar he didn't like, he isn't going to do any thing that could put his Federal grants in jepardy.
Reaction to decision to send posse after illegal immigrants
PHOENIX Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's decision to send deputies and volunteers out looking for illegal immigrants is drawing strong criticism from some in the Hispanic community.
The sheriff says it's an attempt to slow the tide of illegal immigrants into the county.
Former state senator and Hispanic community leader Alfredo Gutierrez says "Every act like this contributes to the angst and anger and desperation" in the community.
Gutierrez says arresting illegal immigrants under the smuggling law is a violation of human rights.
The sheriff's office will draw from existing deputies and members of its three-thousand-member posse reserve.

Saw this on Fox today. O'Reilly was less than enthusiastic, which is really a good thing. Joe's my man. He's got the law and the facts on his side. He'll win everytime.
Yeah...Orile started off like he was going to try to corner Arpaio but Arpaio had all the answers and O backed off in a hurry.lol
i've heard stories of corruption in Maricopa county, maybe he's doing this to try to take attention away from issues surrounding him.. that being said, why he's not doing it is not as important as the fact that someone is trying to do something about the illegal alien problem... I just wish Peanuts Gaines here in Warren Co. KY would use a similar approach..
I haven't heard any corruption stuff about him but I know it's possible because he's been doing his thing there for quite a while. I know he doesn't take guff from anyone and especially prisoners.
I was surprised tonight when he came out on Oriles show and flat out said they were going to arrest illegals and if they run out of space, they'll put up more tents. That's my kind of Sheriff.
Tonight on a local Los Angeles TV station the reporter referred to them as "illegal citizens".
Liberal 'journalists' will call them anything they can think of, except for what they really are, illegal aliens.
Sheriff Joe for President. If he took over we'd be out of the sh--hole we're in. (from an ex-cop)
