Here in the US, we have millions of citizens of Asian decent. A reasonable person living in the US would not think someone called David Zhang is from anywhere but the US.

Kirkwood..I think it's clear what the gentleman meant. We have an enormous amount of foriegn born kids in our universities today. For someone to suggest that the name Zhang, is a visa holding student, is at least a little reasonable.
Perhaps he's dead wrong, but the implication that he/she is an automatic racist is just as wrong. I am married to an Asian, and am father to an AMERICAN Asian/Causcasion. I think you maight be knee-jerking just a bit.
