Yeah, the first was a preliminary magnitude, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets changed again.

TONGA NUKUALOFA should be seeing the first signs of any tsunami right about now.

The mag of the quake doesn't really have much to do with tsunami generation, vertical shift is the main factor.

Writing something ugly? Nah. Inappropriate? Maybe, especially if there is loss of life. IMO, nmh was just posting Bible prophesy. Someone must've gotten a little peed and asked the mods to keep the discussion on topic.

Didn't Saint Paul believe HE was living in the end times? LOL

No, alot smaller. That one was a 9.1, this one now downgraded as low as 7.8 -- that's over 100 times smaller, if I calculate correctly.

Sorry-- meant to say 10 times smaller. Or about 13 times in this case.

"As my Dad who was a Lutheran minster always said, you can't worry about it, all the signs of the end of the Earth have been present throughout history. We are no unique."

The bible only says that it will appear that there are more events, diseases etc.

This is due to better world wide communication. In days of old nobody knew what was going on on the other side of the planet, they only saw local events.

Probably. Maybe that's why he didn't get married and have kids. He advised others to do likewise, if they could.

End Times predictions are as common as dirt. Now, we have idiots predicting that 6/6/06 is a likely date. I guess they forgot about 6/6/1906, and 6/6/1806, and so on.

Anticipating the End Times seems to be a popular activity among some Christians. It's almost as though they're looking forward to it. All those non-Christians burning in Hell, and so on. Pretty exciting stuff, I guess.

Whatever blows your dress up, I always say.

Since the strongest quake I experienced was 5.6 in New Jersey, I'd say 7.8-8.1 is closer to Indonesian standards by my estimation.

It depends where you are. I've been in a 6.2 and a 5.6 and the latter felt stronger.

I'm not denying that a 7.8 is not a big quake, I'm just saying it's still very different to a 9.1...

In a book I just read about the 1906 SF earthquake, they stated THAT year had the 2nd highest number of 8+ world wide in recorded history.

It makes me think...

Jesus said that you will hear of wars and rumours of war, earthquakes, etc, but the end is not yet. He then went on to spell what the signs would be. One is the man of sin committing the abomination of desolation (desecrating the temple) which occurs 3 1/2 years after he has confirmed a covenant with the many.

20 miles is pretty deep, but that's still a big quake. The Hawaiians had better keep an eye out. The Aussies will be waxing their surfboards...
