I was just saying to someone in the grocery store.. "What the hell IS cinco de Mayo? I mean really it's MEXICAL Independence day right? What the hell do I care about Mexican Independence day? When I was young and in my clubbing (yea yea, we were all young once) days, it was just an excuse to get ripped on Corona!" Ooooh Beer with a lime in it! I MUST have it! </shaking head>
And that, in a nutshell is it. Mexico is an excuse to get drunk. So that being said, Bridgeport IPA is really nice! So is Sam Adams Boston Lager.

Indeed, in the US, Cinco de Mayo is essentially an excuse for a party, like Bastille Day (in liberal cities), Guy Fawkes Day St. Patrick's Day, Columbus Day, or the Glorious Twelfth of July.

Mexican beer tends to be pretty good, because of all the German immigrants in the 19th century who brought tradition German beermaking techniques to Mexico. Probably the best is "Bohemia" - a real Pilsner-style beer which you don't see here too often - and, of course, the classic to be drunk with lime, salt and tequila is "Tecate". Dos XX had a vogue in the '70s, when full-bodied beer was virtually unobtainable in the Western US and, of course, Corona has been a yuppie beer of choice for 20 years or more. (I was never impressed with Corona)

What the hell IS cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican victory over occupying French troops in the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862.

Mexican Independence Day is September 16th.

Nope, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. That is Sept. 16. Cinco de Mayo is mainly an invention in the '80s and '90s by the US public school system to make Mexican children feel special and build up their self esteem. It was such a minor historical footnote in Mexican history, and an embarrassing one at that that culminated in Maximillian of France on the Mexican throne for seven years, that it was not celebrated in Mexico until US schools started pushing it as a sop to multiculturalism.
