That's not why Canada made the maple leaf flag- Sheesh! Where did you get that from? The search for a canadian flag began in 1925, and was rekindled again by Lester B. Pearson in 1964, who wished to adopt a new and distinctly Canadian flag before Canada's 100'th birthday.

Some provinces still have union Jack type of flags, Such as Manitoba, B.C., Ont. and many of their coat of arms (provincial seal) also contain a union jack.

Hey numbnuts, read my name, I think I know which provincial flags still have the union jack, namely my home province of Ontario, and the Maple Leaf flag is a Liberal Party creation, it essentially represents the Liberal Party of Canada, and came into being right when they started introducing multiculturalism and all their other social reforms.
