Perhaps they don't bother waiting, but I'd be shocked if they are strictly not allowed to wait for criminal suspects. I don't believe it, really.

If they wait to take the illegals into custody after treatment, the BP is liable for their medical bills.

Now, whether the BP abandons them at the hospital as a matter of department policy is unknown to this correspondent...but the matter is moot when you consider the result.

You dont have to believe it for it to be true. I read the article here in freerepublic. These incidents have been in the news almost weekly and Im sure this wont be the last time.
