There MAY have been conservatives who supported Petro, but I don't know of any.........and I'm involved right here in Ohio. (I'm not including all Republicans as conservatives, btw).

Frankly, I don't think there were any 'sound reasons' for a conservative to vote for Petro, because he's not. And Blackwell is, in every sense of the word, morally, fiscally, business-wise, 2nd amendment......across the board.

Didn't check as to how long you've been on this board, but your saying things only to me that didn't apply to me was more than 'lazy.' You're fortunate that I'm polite and didn't let you have it with both barrels for your false accusation.

As for your comments about 'true conservatives'.......I know who you're talking about, and I'm not one, because I actually AM a conservative (not a libertarian liberal). I'm a rational, deep rooted, across the board conservative. Just like Blackwell.

I want what's best for my state, and Blackwell is it. As for DeWine, he makes me crazy, and I let him know. I voted against him in the primary (and it felt good!), but I'm not one of the NON conservative 'purists' who threaten to stay at home and risk letting an abhorrent leftist become our Senator.

Like I said, I love my state, and no one who cares about Ohio will sit home in November to 'teach DeWine a lesson.' NO one.

If you weren't polite, I'd have to point out that the first sentence of my reply said:

I'm just responding to this one, although the comment may apply to all the responses to my comments.

After which I postulated:

First, if you think Blackwell ran no negative ads, you live in an alternate universe.

Since you don't think he ran no negative ads, I clearly did not say you lived in an alternate universe.

Since you ARE a polite person, I simply re-iterate my apology for posting general comments for the group discussion in a post reply to you without more clearly identifying that when I said "you" I meant the general "you people", rather than "you specifically". I had hoped my initial sentence would perform that task, but I was mistaken.

Republicans targeted the House seat Strickland leaves open as one of its best shots nationally to gain a Democratic congressional spot.

Out of your lips into God's ear!

Elitist RINO pols are no better than elitist media. It's the voice of the Ohio people that will count. The state party can do more damage to its own base than anything else...we have that same complaint playing out here in PA.

Individual Republican voters who are not smart enough to understand how important Blackwell & Swann are cannot be bothered with at this point. And Blackwell & Swann(like Steele) will become stronger conservatives for the abuse they have to defend themselves against. THEY will be the ones that change the party of Lincoln for the better- not the useless RINO overlords that are dragging our party down.

For starters, I hear Blackwell talk much more about social issues -- over which the governor has very little control -- than nuts and bolts governance issues. Petro had far more specific and detailed plans for streamlining state government.

Also, there's the ridiculous Tax Expenditure Limitation (TEL) issue he's pushed. A very nice conceptual idea to limit state spending, absolutely slaughtered by terrible drafting. That's the kind of nuts and bolts you just have to get right, because a poorly-drafted bill is a rotten bill no matter how noble the intentions.

Here's where I believe both canidates have an achilles heal. First Strickland. To most liberals, he's a moderate. That won't energize them to turn out. Now you can argue all day that he's a liberal, but the fact of the matter is, he's not a looney liberal and he doesn't appeal to the liberal base.

As for Blackwell, he appeals to his base probably more than any other candidate I've seen recently. That's good news and bad news. The good news is his base will be unbelieveably energized. The bad news is, the base isn't large enough to put him over the top.

It will be interesting to see whether he moves more to the middle (and panders his principals almost to or to the breaking point)or remains the Blackwell he's become known for. If he does move to the middle, a few of his core will feel disappointed and may react accordingly. And if he does, it will show he puts politics above principal. But unless he does, he may alienate the middle. The fence sitters. Those who make up a full 1/3 or more of the electorate. Those who see him as alittle over the top.

Blackwell does have a lot going for him. He looks great in pictures and on tv. He is a gifted speaker. He can charm the rattles off a snake. His trouble will be appealing beyond his base.

This will be a close battle. I don't see a blow out for either Strickland or Blackwell. If Blackwell agrees to debates, then we'll know he believes he's in trouble.

I expect to see Blackwell attempt to buffer his stance on that.

If you think Petro had more detailed plans, you weren't listening to Blackwell.

In any case, it doesn't matter now because Blackwell clobbered him. :)

And I should clarify, that though a conservative or two may have voted for Petro, they did not do so for conservative reasons.......practical, political, one of the insiders who don't want to lose power, perhaps, but not conservatism.

Blackwell was the only conservative in the race.

I've listened to both speak in large and small groups, and met them both. Petro is just more of a detail guy, Blackwell a better "vision" guy. And I voted for Blackwell, so I'm glad he won. I'm just explaining why some Republicans have trepidations about Blackwell.

I think Petro would have done more than Blackwell to streamline government because he'd have had more success working with the legislature to get things done. Not that Ken doesn't want to do at least as much or more. I just don't think he'll be as effective at getting the needed legislation through because he's pissed too many people off.

The Republican insiders I know are all deeply disappointed that Petro has lost to Ken Blackwell in the primary. The RINOs really hate him and they're predicting a dem win in the general. We'll see. I hope Ken pulls it off but it doesn't seem like his party is behind him.

I'm not saying that Ken Blackwell is Reagan. But this sounded much like the attitudes of the establishment Republicans toward Ronald Reagan in 1976 and 1980.

Hopefully this will be a repeat of 1980 and not 1976 for Ohio.

Blackwell could win this race by focusing on jobs. Run as the candidate best able to attack entrenched interests in the state, and attract outside businesses. This state has lost business to state's like Indiana that are more business friendly. That should be 90% of Ken's campaign.

Go to some of those other states, and stand next to the facility that could have been in Ohio. Point out how Ohio's anti-business climate discourages companies from moving here. Point out that Strickland's (expected) endorsements from union and environmental groups will make it impossible to do the needed reform. Promise jobs, not a handout, and force Strickland to take positions publicly that are opposed by the union and environmental base. And hammer that.

Of course, I expect most of his ad time to be devoted to social issues, which is not going to sway the swing votes. Particularly since Strickland is a rural, pro-gun guy.

All have to state now is let's win the Nov. 2 nd election!!!

I've been awaiting for election like this my whole entire life so that I may come out of the shadows and present myself as the person I have become.

So lets win this for this election for all Americans who are tired of same old thing..which is elected officals not taking the right forms of action and not taking a stand.

Please don't let America down....if so you're letting people like myself who have to hide their opinions daily just to survive in America. Blackwell for some people like myself is our only hope of coming out of the shawdows.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Now just win this election!!! Win one for the Gipper!!

He spoke at the California Republican Party Convention last year and got a very enthusiastic reception. Actually, I had never heard of him before then, and I was really impressed. I disagree that the party is not behind him. It would really help the party a lot to have another black Governor. He would also be very good for Ohio. I hope he wins.

I was first introduced to Ken Blackwell a couple of years ago when he appeared with Jesse Jackson, et al at Tavis Smiley's yearly convention. That's when I knew this guy was the real deal. He stood up to the victim pimps and touted "individual liberty and economic freedom". They bashed him because they believed they were denied the American Promise. He tried to explain personal responsibility but of course they didn't get it. It was a classic.
Blackwell won with "grassroots" support. But I do believe the RINOS will close ranks in such important times.

Just think what Blackwell and Swann wins in November could do for the Republican party?

Would it cause some blacks to rethink the strangle hold the RATS have had on them for 40 years?
