The Catholic response would be:
the person is at all times to be loved as God loves him/her
the action is to be rejected, and never to be condoned, or fostered.
We are given the task of leading our children to heaven, not to simply accept them, or be their friends. We have a life-long responsibility to assist them in avoiding mortal sin and attaining God's grace.
