"In my opinion, Alan Keyes loves his daughter much more that the Cheney's love Mary. And the details of his family situation were widely misreported."

And on what do you base that? Surely you're not saying there is a certain amount of love assigned to each reaction a parent makes to difficult situations.

Because the Keyes clearly cared deeply about their daughter's moral character. They had the courage to speak the truth to her, and to not aid her in her sin. The Cheney's -- all of them -- I respect for their silence. But if this story is true, I do not respect their lack of concern for their daughter's moral character. "I just want you to be happy" are the words of weakness, not love. Lots of bad things can make a person happy. It's like that quote on a Jewish thread that I read the other day. Jews think if it is good, it is beautiful. Aryans think if it is beautiful, it is good. It sort of like that. Keyes thinks if it is good it brings true happiness. Cheney thinks if it makes you happy it is good. I'm with Keyes.

One can be concerned about a their child's morality without being openly judgemental. I am sure that "whatever makes you happy" was not the only words father Cheney said to daughter Mary. However, the difference between Cheney and Keyes, is that both father and daughter had the class not to make this a public debate, feeding the "beat them over the head with a bible" group of faux-Christians.

Children are only ours to form and nurture while they are children. Once they are adults and responsible for their own actions, we can approve or disapprove, but we must treat them like adults. Publicly stating that you don't approve of your daughter's lifestyle is a disrespectful way to treat another adult. Publicly stating that you don't approve of someone else's child is a slippery slope most Christians in public life shouldn't stand on.

I join EternalVigilance in congratulating you on that post, especially the line "I just want you to be happy" are the words of weakness, not love.

Sounds like Cheney never did outgrow the Woodstock lovefest mentality (Was he there? I know he wasn't in Vietnam -- he was too busy obtaining deferments.)
