Dean: Republicans Owe The American People Leadership On Immigration
May 2, 2006
Washington, DC - Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement as millions prepared to march peacefully around the country for comprehensive immigration reform:
"No matter where you stand on today's peaceful rallies, the core issue remains. America needs comprehensive immigration reform that will strengthen our borders, protect U.S. workers and their wages, and allow hard working immigrants who pay taxes and obey the law the opportunity to apply for the responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.
"While parents should keep their children in school, the fact that thousands more people will rally today for comprehensive immigration reform throughout the country continues to put a human face on this important issue. Immigrants, legal or otherwise, are human beings, in search of a better future for themselves and their children.
"It is immoral to continue to have millions of people living in the shadows in America, subject to exploitation, not afforded basic human and civil rights, and possibly depressing wages for U.S. workers. Two thirds of Americans understand that, support comprehensive immigration reform, and oppose the Republican plan to criminalize immigrants, families, doctors, and even clergy.
"Democrats will continue to fight for a comprehensive immigration reform bill that is both tough and smart. But Republicans owe the American people real leadership, and have to stand up to the extremist anti-immigrant views in their own Party. President Bush needs to publicly support the comprehensive immigration reform bill the American people want if it is to pass. And Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has to give it a fair chance in the Senate. The President's lack of leadership has not only failed to protect our borders, it has led to the hostility embodied in the House Republicans' bill. Standing on the sidelines won't change that.
"Together, America can do better."
-"...continues to put a human face on this important issue."-
I don't care if it's a human or a kitty cat. If it don't belong here, it should go back where it came from.
Where does Howie get off saying illegals pay taxes. If they paid income taxes, their bosses would get caught.
