WV Senate: a what-if scenario
Vanity / Speculation | 5/1/06 | Self

Posted on 05/02/2006 11:02:47 AM PDT by Salgak

As many of you here in West Virginia know, Senator Byrd's wife died recently. And that he was married for 55+ years.

Which means the 6-month rule may come into play: i.e. with long, stable marriages, spouses often die within 6 months of each other. . .

Which, in turn, means we may well be looking at an Open Seat, come November, or, alternately, Senator Byrd dying AFTER filing/nominating dates close: the "Missouri" scenario that bit John Ashcroft.

So, putting on my old hat as a contingency planner (acquired while I was in the Air Force). . . . what WOULD we do if Senator Byrd died suddenly, and which candidate would best be suited to win should that happen. . . ????

Byrd needs to retire. before nature retires him.

That died decades ago, maybe this is his second wife.

I'd prefer to watch Byrd go down to defeat in a standup election. Speculating on his demise is just as bad the RATS ghoulish Strom Thurmond death watch in 2001-02.

An interesting scenario but in some ways Byrd reminds me of what my father used to say about one of my great uncles: he can't buy his way into heaven, and he's so bad the Devil doesn't want him, so he keeps on living just to spite the rest of us. Byrd may just keep going on and on powered by sheer meanness.

Yeah, who would carry Byrd's white hood for the Democrats?

Wow. That would be a shame.

No, really. Why are you looking at me like that?

I don't think that rule applies to the U.S. Congress. Henry Hyde's wife died years ago. Of course, Jean Carnahan herself is still with us. Theresa Heinz Kerry is still with us. And don't even get me started on Strom Thurmond!!

That would be lovely. But this is also West Virginia in 2006, and a stand-up defeat is NOT going to happen, not against the Pork King of the Beltway. . .

So again, I ask, if the scenario occurs, which of our current candidates is best-suited to exploit it to a victory, and why ??

The state DNC would appoint someone if Byrd won posthumously. If he were to die after the election, the governor would get to pick his replacement. I wonder who Joe would pick??
