Administration's immigration bill lobbying focuses on House leaders
President Bush's growing confidence that he will secure a victory on immigration runs in direct contrast to the House Republican leadership, which is prepared to block legislation that offers illegal immigrants a path to citizenship without sending them home.
Senate Democratic and Republican leaders are closing in on a bipartisan deal to secure the nation's borders, create a guest-worker program for foreign workers and offer citizenship to illegal immigrants who clear certain hurdles.
Assuming agreement is reached in the Senate, White House advisers said Bush believes that he can count on House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and other leaders to rally skeptical House Republicans behind legislation. But the White House may be underestimating the degree of opposition from within his party, according to several GOP members and aides.
GOP leaders are open to a compromise, but not one that involves a centerpiece of the carefully calibrated Senate approach -- allowing illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship as long as they pay a penalty and back taxes, learn English, remain employed and crime-free and get in line.
"That is certainly not the view of the House," said House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who reiterated the House Republican view that the border must be secured before lawmakers even consider offering illegal immigrants guest-worker visas or citizenship.
Issue a test for Bush
House Judiciary Committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.), the chief architect of the House-passed bill that would crack down on illegal immigration without providing avenues for lawful employment, much less citizenship, was equally direct. In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel last week, Sensenbrenner said he was "disturbed" by Bush's recent pronouncements on a pathway to citizenship.

Bush is an internationalist who wants to slowly destroy US sovereignty. It's the "new world order" his daddy talked about.
ping
I've called, mailed & emailed everyone I could think of in the last 2 weeks. I hope many many others are too. It DOES have to stop.
We had better notice what happened in France - they're trying it here and IT HAS TO STOP - N O W
Bush could pick up 30 points in the polls instantly by deporting all illegal aliens.
Bush is mistaken, imo, on immigration, but to say he is out to destroy U.S. sovereignty is just showing everyone your tin-foil hat. If you want to comment, try to rise above the banal sophistry of catch phrases like 'new world order'. Fer gosh sakes, our currency has had that phrase on it for centuries. I guess the NWO conspiracy has taken some time to ripen, huh?
ANTI ILLEGAL ALIEN SENTIMENTS.
from National Review:
Latest Evidence Today Is Backfiring [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today made the following statement about the immigration demonstrations taking place across the United States:
Todays activities are largely counterproductive to the effort for comprehensive reform. Boycotts, walkouts, or protests are not going to get this done. This is an issue that isnt going to get fixed on the streets; its going to take thoughtful action by Congress, Martinez said.
The endearing quality of our nations immigrant history is that each wave has been willing to work hard to achieve the American Dream. A boycott sends the wrong message.
EXACTLY! I said this weeks ago, and apparently the nitwit Republican from Florida finally figured out what the brainwashed masses in the street haven't. Hard to sell the propaganda you care about this country and want to make it better by attempting to inflict economic harm.
Keep marching citizens of Mexico! I want this issue hot an heavy in November. I want Hastert forced to the wall over this for the elections so he won't fold, and I want the Senators increasingly frantic support for amnesty will ensure their defeat. Every damn Mexican flag in the streets succeeds in delaying passage of amnesty in the Senate for another week.
Sensenbrenner must be feeling a tremendous amount of heat for his courageous stand. He needs to hear from Americans that they support him in his efforts to stand up to this arrogant and deluded Whitehouse.
" guess the NWO conspiracy has taken some time to ripen, huh?"
It certainly has. Read Professor Caroll Quigley's infamous book "Tragedy and Hope" and then you will be qualified to make an informed comment. The internationalists may seem to be the nicest people, like Dubya, but their long-term goal is the eventual elimination of US independence through unlimited free trade, unlimited immigration, and eventual political amalgamation. It's hard to believe, but it's true.
That's right and all us Republican Americans will be the winners too.
The socialist democrats who care what happens to them. I do care what happens to all of us American REPUBLICANS and our values, and I fear for the future for our families!!!
BTTT! We've been sold out.
So much for the theory that the only people who care about this are a few malcontents on FR.
SEAL THE BORDERS NOW!
Are you a kook, or do you just pretend to be one?
Could you please explain Bush-the-Internationlist-Conspirator's motives for opting out of the Kyoto Accords, and unilaterally discarding the outdated ABM treaty? Or his commitment to building a working Missile Defense? Or his relentless pursuit of Islamic terrorists, on which he staked his re-election? Guess our Prez is going to some pains to hid his REAL affiliations, right?
President Bush already failed the test. His ego will not allow him to see the wisdom of the Senate and House. He failed to secure the border and if anything he will veto anything that will do the same. The man has lost his mind. He has been out to lunch so much he forgot us Americans. Sorry, but I am mad as hell. Been a Republican forever and will probably still vote Republican.
Hold the line, House.
