There's the great story of the college professor who taught his students all about the benefits of socialism. The students were so taken they immediately dove into their assignments. One student was awarded an A+. The prof suggested the studeent split the grade with another student who was given a C. The student objected complaining that was not fair because of all the effort that was put into the project. The professor responded, "Welcome to Capitalism."

what struck me is that if NCC really wanted to change its image, shouldn't it be going for "diversity" and go after high achieving WHITE students?

This mindless piece almost trumps the old "Poor Me" card I used to play on my mom and dad when I was five or six year old -- when I didn't get to open my box of Cracker Jacks before dinner. *S*

What pathetic, shameless blather!

No actually, I didn't tell it too well..The prof (there are a few good ones) was pointing out the basic flaw of socilism. Even the most idealistic of students can be shown socialism is inherently unfair.

Cherry,

Good Point. And why didn't they slam NCCU for a lack of divesity? Why didn't the slam the NCCU Chancellor for making public statements saying the accuser needed the full support of the University, when nothing has been decided in court?
Why didn't they slam NCCU for hosting and sponsoring candlelight vigils where posters were distributed with the Names and Pictures of the white members of the lacrosse team. NCCU, in effect, fostered an environment of hate and vigilantism (or ran the risk of some people interpreting the vigils as calls for action) This with OUR taxpayer's dollars.

If I understand completely.
"Even if the Duke lacrosse players didn't rape the exotic dancer, they are still guilty because they could have done it, as in, those people are capable of doing such things. And so, our feelings suffer more outrage and disgust, because they're ALL capable of doing such things, and that's what ruins things for everyone...... Ahhh yes, they could have done it.".
I do believe it's something like that.

I appreciate the feelings of posters who hold NCCU partially responsible for this mess.

I don't.

NCCU is full of bureaucrats and government grants, but there really isn't much else bad to say about this workingman's college. There are lots of hardworking kids and first-generation college types there. They have my admiration and approval for their effort and for keeping their eyes on the American Dream.

Duke is a bunch of out-of-state, out-of-touch, very smart faculty and student fast-trackers. The amazing thing about the school is the tiny impact this major institution can have on the state where it is housed. Good hospital, though--the best in the region.

Don't feel blame NCCU for its student's part-time job, and don't pity Duke in its typical elitism and self-absorption.

Paristwelve,

Exactly, not the way they would want justice applied to them,
I am sure.

Now, LOOK, her comes Duke apparently going to throw more mud on the players before trial:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/14468914.htm

Notice, how absolutely no one will questions NCCU about their student's off-campus behavior. The accuser, a NCCU student, has larceny, assault, DWI, 3 license suspensions,... but NO ONE puts pressure on NCCU to answer or form a committee. How very strange?

The university is aggressively recruiting top minority students — sometimes competing for them against Duke —

Maybe they should -- gasp -- think about admitting some top non-minority students.

VaFarmer,

Why should we judge Duke as a whole (or even an team as a whole) by the unproven allegations that fall apart more and more with each passing day?

When you say, NCCU has a bunch of "Hardworking kids" You remind me of the Black Duke professor that came out early on and called for getting rid of the lacrosse program at Duke. He described the black football players as hard working kids, and the White Lacrosse players as out-of-control, arrogant, and full of contempt for the law.

Again, in what other case do we tar an entire group or sanctify them? Why is it suddenly okay to bash a group when they are white males? The relevant NCCU student here is Crystal Mangum and she is anything but hardworking - she certainly is not lawful.

I think when people say NCCU is a bunch of hard working kids and Duke kids are privledged and mean - they have drank the Kool-Aid the PC Media has been serving up.

North Carolina Central University does not have a lacrosse team.

Has NCCU ever had a demand for a lacrosse team? Blame Duke!

Students often cannot check out books from the main library, which is being renovated after a mold infestation.

Lack of funds or bad management? Blame Duke!

The business school is fighting to regain accreditation.

Lack of funds or bad management? Blame Duke!

Sixty percent of the students receive need-based financial aid.

Preached socialism from the pulpit, the classroom, the politician's podium. Blame Duke!

Eighty-one percent are black.

A large afro-centric curriculum. Blame Duke!

Only 28 percent graduate after four years.

Expecting miracles of scholarship from those ill-prepared for the course load. Blame Duke!

At least $121 million in state spending in the last six years has brought new law and science buildings and dormitories, and more projects are planned.

20 million a year and still no lacrosse team, a musty, dysfunctional library, decertified business program, massive financial aid, 81 % of one color, of which only 28% graduate. Blame Duke!

Nuff' said.

If we are going to label the students at NCCU (a historically Black college) as hardworking and the Duke Students as not.

Then, let's get the whole story out:

There are diversity Fellowships
Diversity scholarships
Diversity Grants
Minority Scholarships
Diversity Programs
Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) Scholarships
Diversity Committees
Diversity Leadership programs
Diversity Courses
Diversity Departments
Minority Studies
Multiculural Scholarships
There's an Office of Minority Empowerment
Diversity Initiatives
Office of Multcultural Life
The Positive Black Woman Scholarship
Understanding the Black Family Scholarship
African American Male Initiative (AAMI)

Here's one, you just have to be non-Caucasian: (Caucasians need not apply)

To be eligible, you must:

* Attend an accredited U.S. college or university
* Have minority student status (non-Caucasian)

Another one is very selective: Must be a Black male graduating high school senior

. Free Ride, Plus expenses, here you go:
/// Full Medical Scholarships for African Americans ///

Please pass this on to any African American who may be interested in a free medical degree. Washington University in St. Louis, the Medical School, now ranked number 2 (along with Baltimore's John's Hopkins University Medical School) has scholarships to award to bright black Americans. The students that are chosen will be awarded full tuition for 4 yrs - $30,000.00 per year - PLUS $2,500.00 stipend. AND The University pays all travel and interview expenses.

There's everything from an Oprah Scholarship to a (Disgraced) Ron Brown Minority Scholarship,
and one web-site has 200 different Minority scholarships

There's even a diversity scholarship that's charter is "to ensure a Diverse Library workforce" !

Good Post.

Here's another one for you (after reading all the minority scholarship info).

Minority students don't read as much, because there's not enough Black Librarians. BLAME DUKE!

Thank God we have the scholarship to "ensure a diverse Library workforce" That pressing issue keeps me up at Night!

Again, no criticism of NCCU and they have hosted a "NCCU Hip Hop Music Summit" and, in a separate instance, offered Free coveted tickets to see rap artists Nore, Pastor Troy, Cam'ron, M.O.P., The Diplomats, Truth Hurts and Field Mob - FOR VOTING:

**** Here's a MUST READ *****

http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=1&ItemID=10092

excerpt:
"The seismic shock of the recent and now notorious rape charges levied against the Duke Lacrosse team has upturned this complex cultural cocktail of a city, occupied by an aloof and narcissistic private school catering mainly to wealthy students rarely seen outside the gothic cloister of their campus... McFayden had the unholy arrogance to show up at the Take Back the Night Rally on campus and while sexual assault survivors gathered in a circle, he stood on the sidelines giving interviews with the Chronicle, Duke's odious student paper."

Are you speaking of the 28% that make it out or all of them? /sarc
