Say now, that's a GOOD idea! Imagine a team with athletes who can actually read and write!

Sarcasm on --

This is not a good idea because :

1. A team named the Crusaders will offend Muslims.

2. These home schoolers do not celebrate diversity, from what I am told.

Sarcasm off --

The liberal state of Maryland has, per capita, more homeschooled kids than any state in the union. Although my three home and private-schooled kids are too young to play at the high-school level, it's great to know that we will have the option!

I've long looked at the homeschoolers suing school districts to let their kids into sports and other programs with a bit of a jaundiced eye.

This is the way to do it. Form your own teams and compete with the legacy school systems head to head. Once College recruiters start paying attention to these home-school and private school teams it will be another nail in the coffin of the monstrosity that is the American Public Education system.

I think this is a great idea and I hope the idea catches on for other sports. I'll imagine that these parents will be happier over all having this type of arrangement rather than becoming part of the public school crowd.

Mr. Jorgensen worked for three years to get a bill through the state legislature that would allow students not attending public schools to play on public school teams -- only to see the bill fail each time.

And well it should have failed. If they aren't enrolled in public school, they shouldn't play for them either.

Let's see. . .

Offends Muslims ? Blows off "Diversity" ?

Sounds like a dual win to ME. . . (evil grin)

"If they aren't enrolled in public school, they shouldn't play for them either."

How about "If they aren't enrolled in public school, they shouldn't PAY for them either". That wouldn't work, would it? If I pay the damn bill, they should have access to what I'm paying for.

Get over it, Frances. So, if you don't ever drive down US Hwy 1, does that mean you don't have to pay your taxes either? Your congress critter doesn't do the job you voted him into office for, he still gets your tax dollars. All those illegals on welfare are also getting your tax dollars. From the time you're 18 until you die you pay education taxes whether you have kids in school or not. No one told you to homeschool, it was your choice.

I FEEL that the homeschoolers should be able to play in the district in which they reside. They pay the taxes, they don't use up the teaching resources, at the very least they should be able to try out for high school sports teams.

I maybe wrong but I get the feeling the number of teams will increase to the point where Home School leagues can be formed and eventually have a playoff system as they do with government run schools.

In Tennessee private schools are made to play public schools that are one class higher than the one that would be correct with the number of pupils. The reason? They say that the private schools have more motivated students to choose from and therefore have to play schools in the higher population class.

They do the same thing in Illinois, but it isn't because of motivation, it's because the private schools around Chicago recruit athletes from the 8th grades, and end up building an all-star team from communities from a wide ranging area.

I like this idea better than the alternative. You put your kids into the government schools....just for sports...and you'll soon be picking up all the regulations to boot.

Better to keep home schools separate. You never get a free lunch without a catch.

Ping!

(I just noticed this one). In our state, some homeschoolers have started their own sports teams, too. They play against private/parochial schools.

That's been happening in CNY for some time now. We found YMCA swimming worked well for us. Community based teams can be OK, too, depending on a lot of things.

Funny thing I found is, is that even teachers who are no fans of homeschooling, don't think keeping homeschooled kids off varsity teams is fair. The first question I always got asked (without fail) is; "You pay taxes, don't you?"

No one told you to homeschool, it was your choice.

No one told anyone to have children, either. Yet, amazingly, most parents expect other people to pay thousands of dollars every year to educate the kids they chose to have.
