Michael Berg has come to terms with his son's murderer. But to most Americans that man is still enemy No.1, writes Martin Daly in New York.
In the darkness, when the pain becomes too great, Michael Berg pulls out a chair for the man who decapitated his son and talks to him about compassion and forgiveness.
Michael Berg has cried publicly many times for his dead son but he has forgiven Zarqawi, considered by the Americans to be the premier threat to peace in Iraq, but who remains free despite a $US25 million ($33 million) bounty on his head, and the huge numbers of personnel and technological resources being used to track him down.
In offering forgiveness to a man who this week told the world he planned to continue killing, Berg has had to go down dark, complex paths and has had to come to terms with an horrendous loss that has become public property.

If he wanted to forgive, that's OK, but he should have done it in his heart and not made it a public political thing.
Michael Berg was blaming George Bush for his son's murder as soon as it happened. What happened to his son is truly horrifying; but Michael Berg is scum----as hateful of this country as anybody you'll ever meet.
Tah-Dah!
You're right on all counts!
What a chump.
You murder one of my children. I'm coming for your ass.
I'm going to hurt you or someone close to you
even if I have to bring my cardiologist with me.
You're right. Privately, we can do anything, but publically, he's attempting to set his own policy. His actions emboldens the creeps that did it
What's truly sad is that Michael Berg was an anti-American kook even before his son was killed. You would hope that such a tragedy might cause him to consider that maybe those Al Qaeda guys are really just evil. But no, instead he goes the opposite route and uses his new-found celebrity to go after the enemy of his son's murderer. There must be a medical term for whatever mental affliction he has.
Oh bully.
I have 4 and soon to have five children.
He's forgiving cause he's too weak to hold in that rage and pain and work to help get satisfaction somehow.
You take hard pain like that and you put somewhere safe but pull it out and get the energy you need from it when you need it.
Folks been through serious trauma will know what I mean.
When my dad was dying hard someone told me that yes, you'll get over it but you'll never remember them as closely as you do now when the pain of loss is fresh. You'll miss feeling it this much....and they were right
Forgive someone who cuts my child's head off with a Buck knife?
No way.
Hell yes.
In this case, forgiveness is self serving
like these animals care...they see it for what it is....weakness
neither me or Mo are Jesus jern..lol
and have never claimed to be
BTTT
what the hell is wrong with these folks
i can't imagine going all soft....
The guy is a Left wing radical. I guess that's enough of a mental disorder itself.
cogent
LOL
I have known a lot of Israelis
Some were even lefties but fools about muzzies they were not
My sentiments exactly.
This Berg was anti war before the beheading and seems to have returned to his misguided beliefs.
Right on!
Murdering an innocent and helpless human is something for which there is no forgiveness. I believe the father's publicizing this is a political move colored as an ethical act. It seems that the liberal forces believe that Saddam wasn't evil too.
During our time on earth we have a responsibility to fight evil when it crosses our path, not forgive it. If one forgives Satan's minions and sides against the forces that are fighting evil, what type of testimony does that person bear during their judgement?
I'll get flamed for this, but I believe its spiritual treason.
me too but remind me not to ever flame you here..lol
Best post of thread.
Just like nice thoughts ...it costs nothing.
Working for retribution....that would cost something.
no kidding....
