This Kerry "dissent" stuff reminds of my favorite line from Woody Allen's "Annie Hall":

If they merged "Dissent" and "Commentary" they would have "Dysentery". :-)

Dissent for its own sake is like the Democrats' energy policy: We're opposed to any kind of energy; we prefer to be mired in enervated passivity. If the right is full of armchair generals, the left is full of armchair generalities: Nothing can be done, any course is futile, everything's a quagmire. All we can say for certain is that saying so for certain is the highest form of patriotism.

Thanks for posting the thread.

Great read! Thanks.

" ... The last time Sen. Kennedy went rummaging for an old quote was when he stood up at the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston and announced that "here once the embattled farmers stood and fired the shirt around the world." ..."

I take comfort in the fact that one day, perhaps soon, I will wail and gnash my teeth over the sudden passing of Senator Kennedy.

Of course it will be because it was entirely too long in coming.

I kept waiting for Steyn to prove that Jefferson never said that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. Then I realized that it is impossible to prove a negative - unless I suppose the NSA has verifiable tapes of everything Jefferson ever said ;-)

So I suppose the burden now shifts to the other side to prove Jefferson did say it.

This is from About.com (hat tip to google, of course). The columnist is David Emery, the posting day is Feb. 15, 2005. So this has actually been debunked for a while. Leave it to the faux JFK to revive yet another lie.

"The trouble is, says reader Dave Forsmark, who has been waging a one-man campaign to correct what he believes to be a blatant misattribution, "the quote is about two years old, not 200. It was made by [historian] Howard Zinn in an interview with TomPaine.com to justify his opposition to the War on Terror." Someone erroneously attributed the quote to Jefferson soon thereafter, and now seemingly everyone is doing it.

Based on some rudimentary checking, it appears Mr. Forsmark is correct."

Here is the link to the page (hope it works), there is an embedded link to the Zinn interview there, it appears, I didn't check if it worked.

Dissent may be a for of Patriotism at times.

Like when I dissented from Kerry by voting for George Bush.

In Kerry's case Dissent is Treason. he should have been tried for it years ago

Wher is the F-180 Dipstick, you lying sack of crap.

Thanks for the link. I followed one from the article and found this.
Political dissention is doubtless a less evil than the lethargy of despotism, but still it is a great evil, and it would be as worthy the efforts of the patriot as of the philosopher, to exclude its influence, if possible, from social life.
Doesn't sound like TJ was all that high on dissent!

Genius is much too mild a word for Mark Steyn.

*****

I hope every talk radio host uses at least some of this article on their shows tomorrow.

Brilliant exposition of the party against everything except regaining power!

"Yeah, that's right. Dissent -- a Jefferson quote. Shove one in around the fifth paragraph, but snap it up, will you? I got a fitting for my new even-more-buttock-hugging yellow lycra cycling shorts in 20 minutes."

That's gonna leave a mark!
