Howdy to G.W. Harper(Toronto-Centric BARF ALERT)
The Red Star ^ | April 29,2006 | Linwood Barclay

In what may be our new Prime Minister's boldest move yet, he is changing his name to George W. Harper.

People who keep track of these sorts of things say they cannot recall any other time in this nation's history when a sitting Prime Minister changed his name. Instances of politicians switching from one party to another are too numerous to mention, but the Prime Minister has really broken ground here by adopting a different moniker.

It is said that Brian Mulroney briefly considered going by "Ronnie" at one point during his stint at 24 Sussex, but abandoned the idea when he considered the exorbitant costs of re-monogramming — from "BM" to "RM" — his handkerchiefs, cufflinks, underwear, socks, toilet paper, that sort of thing.

As for Stephen Harper going by George W. Harper, the change does not require parliamentary approval. It is, according to constitutional experts, a purely personal matter that does not have to be brought before the House of Commons.

That has some opposition critics howling.

"If he were just trying a different hairstyle, even growing a moustache, I could live with that," said interim Liberal leader Bill Graham. "But this is about more than facial hair. Voters elected a man named Stephen Harper, not George W. Harper."

For the Left, this is actually an improved image of Harper since
prior and during the election, he was AH, for Adolf Harper.

I've been to Canada quite a bit, both business and pleasure. The liberals in Toronto and Ottawa don't represent the views of most Canadians.

I, as a visitor, and they as residents, welcome the sanity that Harper is bringing back to our northern brothers.
