The system is voluntary?

Yes, louts are so well known for voluntarily cooperating with law enforcement.

That means the government will eventually make this mandatory.

Hello 1984. Glad I don't live in the UK.

So the louts are going to do this? And what's in it for the non-lout?

I'm thinking '666, the Beginning' here. LMAO!

Prithee, what's the difference between a "lout" and a "yob"?
Tell me or I'll scob your nob.

That's illegal in some states.

Firkin. I had to look that up in my Funk & Wagnells.
It's a codpiece?

I think that means voluntary for the pub owner.

The louts can voluntarily cooperate with the pub owner or stay out of the pub owner's private property.

OK, I remember now. I am re-edified.
Ann Boleyn caught Henry VIII in the loo and innocently asked,
"Jerkin your merkin, are ya Hank?"
The rest is, as they say, history.

"Clubbers will be asked to have their right index finger scanned and show picture identification to register on the system."

But...

"It will also mean that they do not have to carry ID on them which can often be the source of inconvenience."

They've obviously thought *this* process through...

Folks, please. There is an important story here. Our British cousins are reverting to savagery. No one wants to face it, but it's true. This is a huge problem.

Sorry son, but no doubt a few Britishers will take offence to that, and I'm one of them.
Having lived in the UK for, well, most of my life and living in Manchester, I can say we are not "reverting to savagery". The problems on our streets aren't a patch on the savagery going on in the US. 10,000 murders a year? That should put a little perspective on it I reckon. I would rather get mugged than murdered.
There is nothing wrong with this new system. I have no problem with sticking my thumb on a sensor if I haven't done anything wrong. And I will know that the rest of the crowd in the bar will be fellow law-abiding citizens. Technology is a good thing yes?

Hmm...

Barkeep: "Right, mate, step up and give us yer thumb."

BtD: "Yes, sir. Ooh, that tickles."

Barkeep: "What's this, then? Name Drill, convictions for shoplifting, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, littering, loitering, speeding, creating a public nuisance, riding a tricycle while intoxicated, and sex with an underage invertebrate."

BtD: "That was last night. I can explain everything."

Barkeep: "Right, then. Give us yer other thumb..."

U.S. thugs murder each other at a far higher rate than U.K. thugs. This accounts for the higher murder rate in the U.S. Thugs attack non-criminals at a far higher rate in the U.K. If you are not a criminal, your liklihood of being a victim is higher in the U.K., including murders. Since I am not a criminal, this is what matters to me.

One of the most foolish habits of Brits (and Canadians) is to look at problems and negative trends in their own societies and rather than facing them, to instead make some spurious comparison with how much "worse" things are in America, and then just let their own problems fester and worsen.

That said, I too have no problem with the new system. I would be happy if they did it here.
