More than 17,000 Americans have been wounded in Iraq, and Thursday evening, one of those wounded returned home in Southern Arizona.

Private First Class Michael Manning hugs his wife for the first time since his army unit headed to Iraq on December 1st.

“You can't describe it,” says Theresa Manning, the soldier’s wife.

Pfc. Manning cried tears of joy as the Tombstone graduate hugged and saw his son, Aiden, for the first time since the baby was 4 weeks old.

“He’s gonna be proud of his dad,” says Manning’s wife.

Pfc. Manning says he’s elated, “Just to be home with my wife and baby."

He says he treasures every moment because the Arizona native acknowledges he's lucky to be alive.

“A piece of shrap medal went here,” says Pfc Manning, as he pointed to his injuries on his legs.

As his convoy was ambushed by insurgents with a roadside bomb, “I heard an explosion. It just got black after that,” says the Private First Class.

However, once the smoke cleared, Pfc Manning was air-lifted to a Bagdad hospital, and, now, two weeks later, Manning is recovering alongside his wife, and six month old son.

Theresa Manning says, “He’s definitely going to know his dad was a hero, and was hurt over there. And they're doing a job, but he knew what could happen, and he did anyway.”

Manning had surgery on his leg on Monday, and, now the army has given him 30 days to recover here in Southern Arizona , and more importantly, Manning says, valuable time to spend with his wife and baby.

“A piece of shrap medal went here,”...

Obviously a reporter who knows little about the military.
