Though seemingly an insignificant date of historical importance, May 4 is a day of momentous tax events. It was on May 4, 1932, notorious gangster Al Capone was jailed for tax evasion based in-part on the uncompromising investigation of Eliot Ness. Capone's jailing ended his infamous reign of terror in Chicago. May 4, 2006, is also a day of infamy for Washington taxpayers. It is on this day Washingtonians will finally reach their Tax Freedom Day, ending the reign of terror taxes have on our wallets for the year.
Each year the Tax Foundation calculates the date by which taxpayers will finally have worked long enough to pay their tax burden. According to the Tax Foundation, "Tax Freedom Day is calculated by dividing the official government tally of all taxes collected in each year by the official government tally of all income earned in each year."
Prior to World War I, America's total tax burden required working only until January 24, a mere 23 days (six for the federal government and 17 for state and local). By 2006, the average national tax burden required working until April 26, or 116 days (77 federal and 39 for state and local governments).
In Washington, our combined tax burden will require working 124 days (until May 4). This is eight days above the national average and the fourth worst ranking nationally. For comparison, California ranked ninth (120 days), Oregon 28 (111 days), and Idaho 42 (106 days).
The state's tax burden ranks 13 highest when focusing only on the 40 days it took Washington taxpayers to pay for our state and local tax burden in 2006. Taxpayers in California also worked 40 days (ranked 15), with those in Idaho working 38 days (ranked 31), and in Oregon 37 days (ranked 35).
Although we will soon reach our Tax Freedom Day, don't get too excited. We're still working to pay for the full cost of government, which includes the cost of regulation.
Cost of Government Day (COGD) will not be reached until sometime in July. Calculated annually by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), COGD is defined by ATR as "the date of the calendar year on which the average American worker has earned enough gross income to pay off his or her share of spending and regulatory burdens imposed by all levels of governmentfederal, state and local."
With the recent demise of Washington's voter-approved I-601 taxpayer protections, we may be counting our blessings if we only have to toil until May 4 next year to payoff our government-imposed tax burden. Hopefully, a taxpayer's version of Eliot Ness will come to the rescue and help end the racket of excessive taxation.

And Comrade Kerry and the rest of the Marxists, want TO RAISE OUR TAXES. How long before they take the stars off our flag and replace it with a red hammer and sickle ???
BTTT The WA dems were saying the other day on the news how thrifty & careful & responsible they have been with their budget. Good grief.
If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.
John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.
H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.Refer for additional information:
Doncha' jus' luv workin' for the gubbermint and not being' paid for it???
"The WA dems were saying the other day..."
Now they're saying our surplus is gone and we're back in a deficit again. Where did it go? More to the point, WHO did it go to?
The bill is in the House and if we demand loud enough and get it passed, as of next Jan, there will be NO MORE IRS.

You want government off your back?
You want the power back in our hands and the reps REALLY reps who have to pay attention to us?
Let's stop complaining and DO something about it.
Demand the media get on this...bombard the congresscritters and the senators.
You want to keep the GROSS from your paycheck - not one cent deducted?
You want the kennedies/sKerry to finally pay their FAIR SHARE?
You want the illegals to pay from dollar one? (Billions alone to Washington)
You want never to look at a W-2 form again?
You don't want to account for where you make your money or how much?
All ya gotta do is demand this FAIR tax Bill FairTax (H.R. 25) go through.
We aught to at least get as much steam behind this as the illegals problem. This effects every single one of us, every single pay day. It shuts down the IRS forever and destroys their records. No specter of audits, of the Gestapo IRS hovering over your shoulder.
WRite letters to the editor, make people aware, include the links.
Contact your reps and demand they join Sen. Linder
Contact all our media friends - if they get on it heavy, the MSM media will have to join...and they can't talk against it. They can't come out in support of the IRS. I'd love the see them choking over this!
But we have a short window of opportunity.
Let's ROLL on FairTax (H.R. 25)
sponsored by Senator Linder - maybe we should run him for Pres.

Get busy!
People think slavery was abolished 150 years ago.
Ask somebody what they'd call a person that was forced to work without receiving any compensation. That's us for four months every year. Does that make us 'part-time slaves' ? It sure doesn't make us 'free'.
Seems to be getting to be less "part-time" all the time.
LOL Standard black money pits... "Expanded programs", 800 new state union voters...er...employees... You know, the ususal. ;)
There is no tax freedom day when you consider we pay for all corporate taxes that are passed on to the consumer.
