L.A. Authorities Brace for Huge Immigration Marches

Two immigrant rights demonstrations Monday in Los Angeles could each draw a half-million marchers or more, police said Thursday, as officials expressed concern about a major disruption of traffic, commerce and school.
LAPD Assistant Chief George Gascon said the estimates are based on street intelligence and what he described as a well-organized campaign involving radio stations, churches and community groups. Police do not expect trouble, he added.
Demonstrations are planned for downtown at noon and Mid-Wilshire at 4 p.m. Gascon said the LAPD is gearing up to deal with hundreds of thousands of demonstrators at each.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Cardinal Roger Mahony and others have encouraged protesters to attend the late-afternoon march from MacArthur Park down Wilshire Boulevard to La Brea Avenue, prompting authorities to say that crowd might be the larger of the two.
Officials in Santa Ana, Huntington Park, Oxnard, Riverside, Pomona and San Diego said they expect smaller but boisterous protests.
Police in Chicago, meanwhile, estimated that as many as 500,000 could take to the streets in that city, while Seattle officials and protest organizers said they expect anywhere from 10,000 to 50,000 marchers.
Officials acknowledged that it is difficult to predict the size of any protest crowd, noting that at a march last month, the LAPD had expected far fewer protesters than the estimated 500,000 people who showed up outside Los Angeles City Hall.
But if the LAPD's estimates prove correct, Monday's marches would approach the scope of that event — one of the largest protests in Los Angeles' history.

These people are not protestors, they're criminals, law breakers...
What is being protested? Answer: Enformcement of the law.
Have buses standing by, herd them to the buses, tell them they are taking their cause nationwide. Load them on the buses, take them to coast, load them on ships, take them out to sea, drop them off in south america. I hear Peru is nice this time of year.
I heard this comedian the other night talking about Mexicans doing work here in the US. He is a Mexican.
Funny how racist these people are. While they immediately brand any opposition to their illegal entry as "racist", they don't blink at slurring Nicaraguans or Hondurans with racist sneers.
When he talked about "Mexicans doing the jobs that Americans don't want to do", he openly acknowledged that those jobs are now roofing, sheetrock, framing, and many other normal construction jobs...and cleaning toilets and landscaping are for the Nicaraguans!
Also, these Mexicans are taking their money, sending it home so that their families can have really nice homes and Nicaraguan maids.

Ok, now I'm ready for Monday!
I live blocks from the route of the L.A. march and got home last night to learn that my kids parochial school is closing at noon on Monday. My blood begins to boil...mistakingly believing that the archdiocese has orderded them to call off school so they can march. But I was wrong. The reason for the early closure is that it will be impossible for parents to pick up their kids from the school at the normal closing time. In fact, I work on the other side of the march line and I see no way that my commute doesn't increase from 30 minutes to at least 2 hours. They will be clogging about 8-10 major north-south arteries and two east-west traffic arteries...lucky me.
When we get back to having normal immigration I hope Mexico is not given more slots than any other country. In fact any Mexican, Guatemalan ... etc that is legalized should count against the immigration quota of country of origin.
There wouldn't be any more slots for Mexico this century.
Are Mexicans raciest? You bet, They are shipping their mixed race and Indians people of color to the USA. While the white Europeans reap the benefits and live the good life.
I'm waiting til Monday to buy a new plasma screen TV.
I hope I don't have to load it myself.

If they are blocking public thoroughfares, then the authorities should call out the national guard to supplement the local police.
In fact, if those are Interstate Highways, I believe they are under the direct jurisdiction of the military. I'd love to see the Marines, ummmmmm....... unblock....... those roads
Knuckling under to these lawbreakers is wholly unacceptable and offensive to law-abiding Americans. Americans in LA should be up in arms over this.

I'm having a little trouble with the word "when". I think it is more like "if", and with the "leadership" in this country right now, that's a very pale, sickly, limp-wristed "if".
I DO hope you are right, though.
I live in the South Bay. Don't know what to expect here, but the worst of it will be in L.A. city.
The authorities won't do anything to stop it...it's just like any other parade/march/demonstration where streets are shut down. We may not like the message, but if we don't let them protest, then we lose our right to protest.
Apparently they have whatever permits they need.
As far as the arteries...it's not freeways...it's major streets that will will be affected...Alvarado, Hoover, Vermont, Normandie, Western, Crenshaw, Highland, La Brea, Fairfax, Wilshire, 6th Street, etc. All of these streets move a lot of cars & busses during rush hour, and those vehicles will be forced onto neighboring streets like 3rd, Beverly, Melrose (yes...THE Melrose), Olympic, Pico, La Cienega, etc. An absolute nightmare for those living in the area.
It's similar to the L.A. Marathon and Aids Walk L.A. -- major traffic disruptions -- but at least those are held on weekends.
I hope they are planning to keep these people from disrupting our economy and shutting down our cities and not ordering popcorn and sodas.
Well then I misunderstood your post.
Recently, here in St. Louis, "minority" contractors blocked the Interstate in a "protest" over contracts for a public works project. Unacceptable.
So in LA, if they have secured the permits and obtained the proper approval, then that is as it should be.
Too bad they aren't as law-abiding when it comes to immigration itself.
Oh please. This was not organized by a foreign government. This type of talk just convinces people -- who are on the fence about the issue -- that the anti illegal immigrant folks are card carrying members of the tin foil hat brigade.
The L.A. Mayor, the L.A. Cardinal, and many other local organizations (unions, political groups, etc.) organized this. And yes, I'm sure the CP USA is invovled. They have every right to be involved, as much as I disagree with everything they espouse.
The L.A. Mayor is as close to a member of a foreign govermment as we have ever had. Most of the California legislature are informal employees of Mexico.
