WASHINGTON A new poll suggests that a third political party focused on immigration enforcement could cause a major shakeup in the 2008 election. Just don't bet on border-control crusader Rep. Tom Tancredo to jump on that bandwagon.
Today, the political bulletin Rasmussen Reports released a survey of 1,000 people that found that a third-party candidate who promised to make border security and immigration enforcement the "top priority" would run neck-and-neck with a generic Democrat and well ahead of a generic Republican.
Tancredo, a lifelong Republican from Littleton, has gained a national following over his border-control crusade and has toyed with the idea of running for president in 2008.

some here will crushed...but unlike some here, Tancredo isnt a traitor.
In the past, third party = Clinton.
PING
But in an interview at his [Tancredo's] Capitol Hill office, he ruled out running as a third-party candidate.
"Yes, I've thought about it," he said. "You get nowhere with it . . . I'd rather push the Republican Party in the direction I think it should be going."
In the present, Republicans ~ Democrats
We don't need republicans to leave the republican party. We need the RINO'S to leave.
Unfortunately, that is accurate.
I remind myself that the political situation could be compared to a marriage that is having problems. Some issues cannot be resolved. However, divorce will be worse for everyone.
We have some good GOP Senators and more good GOP House members. Perhaps we need to concentrate on retention of the good ones and work hard to replace the bad ones with better ones.
Recall that conservatives have lost primaries everywhere in the past six years. OTOH, we can pressure the GOP members and we cannot affect the votes of the donk members at all.
Then you can say hello to House Majority Leader Pelosi and her smarmy sidekick Senate Majority Leader Reid, and a Presidential impeachment hearing.

Thanks for your longtime Freeper perspective...oh, wait, you've been a member for a little over a month now. It's amusing to think that "some" (and that would be you) would see someone leaving the Republican party as a traitorous act, and not a bold and courageous one. Rep. Tancredo certainly has what it takes to bolt if he wants to, but he's playing the long game: He can have it both ways--keep his Republican constituency, and pick up many if not all independents and would-be third party types. (And if he had gone third-party, that would aid you-know-who, a la the Perot play of 1992.)
It always pays to think things through. And what's resting comfortably between the lines of these stories of a generic third-partier beating both a dem and pubbie, and Tancredo not bolting for a third party...is something really simple but brilliant:
Tancredo can take the REPUBLICAN nomination for president in '08, with his signature issue, and he can win the general election easily.
My opinion of him just went up.
""It's amusing to think that "some" (and that would be you) would see someone leaving the Republican party as a traitorous act, and not a bold and courageous one.""
Yup Teddy Roosevelt was a real politically couragous person..thank him for the income tax

So you think Tancredo would get over 50% of the vote in a three way race??
I think Tancredo would do to the hispanic vote what Barry Goldwater did for the black vote.
In 1960 Nixon got 35% of the black vote. No one since has topped 15%. No you do the math. What is the maximum the GOP can get with 15% of the black and hispanic vote even if they get 60% of the white vote.
Good for Tancredo he can put a lot of muscle on the Republican party where he is. The liberals are well aware of that. He just passed his first test. He might make a good president time will tell.

"some here will crushed...but unlike some here, Tancredo isnt a traitor."
Explain that remark please.
Like I said: Member since March, 2006.
Teddy Roosevelt was both physically AND politically a courageous person. You're saying that backing the income tax negates those?
"So you think Tancredo would get over 50% of the vote in a three way race??"
Bill Clinton became president with 41+% of the vote in a three-way race in 1993. You don't need 50+% to be elected. Not only are you a newbie, you're an ignoramus.

LEGAL hispanics FAVOR tight immigration and enforcement, per poll after poll. African-Americans FAVOR tight immigration and enforcement, and would drift rightward on this issue. The math part of your question doesn't even make sense, so it therefore doesn't deserve an answer.
I think you're a disruptor of some sort.
I'm counting on any and all Freepers who have been registered longer than five weeks to help take you down.
By the way, issues and sentiments change, over time, so I don't really care what Barry Goldwater did 50 years ago. But I would bet that, were he around today, and were he still BARRY GOLDWATER, the MSM would not be able to derail him so easily as it did back then.

you said that Tancredo would get all the GOP base plus most if not all indepedents..that is over 50% of the electorate.

If you think the GOP will get over 15% of the black vote nationally because of the immigration issue, youre crazy.
Good for you Tancredo! One more reason to vote for him.
Then stay home, I sure as hell don't care. The republican party doesn't need you.
