I have always seen George W. Bush in a different light than almost all of his opponents, and even many of his supporters. He is a trained strategist, an MBA graduate of Harvard Business School, where he learned that the point of having a strategy is to win when it counts, not just to feel good about yourself at every moment of the process.
When it counts, right at election time, Bush tends to come out much better than his enemies assumed he would. The positions they embraced when they thought he was down and out turned out to be not such a winning hand

Don't misunderstimate the man.

I never misunderestimate President Bush. I agree with Thomas.
The Crawford Kid learned long ago that his enemies' greatest weakness is their inflated self-regard, lethally combined with withering contempt for him and his embrace of evangelical Christianity and Texas.
His enemies are, in a phrase, Hot-Lipped Hoolihans.

I like hearing good news. I think you'll see Bush hit his stride as they get into the campaign cycle for the '06 mid-terms.

I'm sorry Dick Gregory, maybe poker's just not your game. I know, lets have a spelling contest.

A good piece, but I am most interested in eventually seeing an assessment of Bush's accomplishments in office once his term is done. There have been so many instances of backing-off, retreating, and one step forward, two steps back-ing ;) that it's frankly tough to see what is strategery and what is failure. For example, his record on immigration doesn't match the impression some here seem to have of him.
I don't agree with everything he's done, but unlike some folks, I'm loyal to Bush because in terms of what I and other conservatives stand for, he's been loyal to me. I just think the record needs to be examined clearly.

All though I personally like GW43, I think he has over played his hand on the immigration issue. Tony has his work cut out for him.
I do give him high marks on Iraq! As long as this country is dependent on foreign oil we will be tied to that middle east sandbox and have to maintain a military presence there. Being right next door to the bully on the block, Iran. Makes perfect sense.

I don't know. Unless Bush does a Kerry-like flip-flop and changes his stance on immigration and spending, he's made his positions on those subjects pretty clear already.

Since President Bush is not running for anything and is not in an election - what is the value of this?
All of these President Bush election columns remind me of the old question: What is the sound of one hand clapping?

Bush's biggest test is just over the horizon, and he knows it.
The outcome of our confrontation (and, make no mistake, there WILL BE a confrontation) with Iran will define his presidency. He's up to it, as he's been up to every foreign policy issue he's faced.

Just wait, Rove & Co., will find a way to put the Dems on the defensive in the Fall. There will be a clear cut choice over a couple major issues. The Dems will be reeled in and make some stupid comments. The convential wisdom that the Democrats will win back the House and Senate is way, way too premature.
Bush, Rove & Co., had them vote for the War and put the same-sex marriage on the ballots in '04. Watch for somthing similar in the Fall, either the tax cuts being made permanent or drilling in ANWAR.

The author is not alone in noting this about Bush. There are a few of us who have already predicted Republican gains this November, based on the Bush "rope-a-dope" strategery.

Watch for somthing similar in the Fall, either the tax cuts being made permanent or drilling in ANWAR. It has already begun. Democrats want rebates on gas prices. Republicans have already attached ANWR to the bill.

This "rope-a-dope" crap has debilitated his Presidency and killed his agenda. There's nothing to admire about it, imho. If he comes back, great! I love the guy. But it will have been in spite of a stupid strategy, not because of it.
When you break from your party's base on immigration and spending and then wonder why your polls are at 36%, you need to get a clue. We are not the "Throw the Mexicans Out" party, but Americans want the laws of the United States followed by all immigrants, not just by some immigrants. In an age of Qaedist terrorism, allowing Hillary to get on your right on the borders issue is inexcusably stupid.
Spending speaks for itself.

Chris
