In my view, the notion that there is a massive Durham black vote that Nifong can shift in his direction by being associated with this circus is totally wrong.
The Durham black community has pride, a long history, and strong ties. THEY ARE SOCIALLY COMSERVATIVE.
The hard-working parents who send their hard-working kids to NCCU are not going to be fond of the media presentation of NCCU as a college where sex work is an acceptable part-time job. Drinking, drugs, illegitimacy are the ultimate enemies of conservative black community members.
Jesse Jackson may work in Yankee communities where black voters have a relaxed attitude toward these ills, but that is not Durham. Black Panthers may see political opportunity in the Duke/Durham situation, but the Durham voters don't usually mess around with race extremists.
I'm sure there are strong opinions expressed at rallies and in Op/Ed columns, but for most Durhamites, especially black ones, this incident is completely humiliating. Don't expect there to be a one-voice, all-together, blacks-against-all voting response to this mess.
