Privately, Bush Says He Favors Citizenship (for Illegals)
AP ^ | April 26, 2006 | DAVID ESPO

Posted on 04/26/2006 5:20:12 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

President Bush generally favors plans to give millions of illegal immigrants a chance at U.S. citizenship without leaving the country, but does not want to be more publicly supportive because of opposition among conservative House Republicans, according to senators who attended a recent White House meeting.

Several officials familiar with the meeting also said Democrats protested radio commercials that blamed them for Republican-written legislation that passed the House and would make illegal immigrants vulnerable to felony charges.

Bush said he was unfamiliar with the ads, which were financed by the Republican National Committee, according to officials familiar with the discussions.

At another point, Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other members of his party pressed the president about their concern that any Senate-passed bill would be made unpalatable in final talks with the House.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat, said the lawmaker who would lead House negotiators, House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, had been "intractable" in negotiations on other high-profile bills in the past. Bush did not directly respond to the remark, officials said.

The Republican and Democratic officials who described the conversation did so Wednesday on condition of anonymity, saying they had not been authorized to disclose details.

Bush convened the session to give momentum to the drive for election-year immigration legislation, a contentious issue that has triggered large street demonstrations and produced divisions in both political parties. Senators of both parties emerged from the session praising the president's involvement and said the timetable was achievable.

"Yes, he thinks people should be given a path to citizenship," said Sen. Mel Martinez., R-Fla., a leading supporter of immigration legislation in the Senate.

Is the truth getting you frazzled?

No it's your obtuseness.

Really, you should look in the mirror....after you take your head out of the sand; but that would require you stop being an apologist for criminals.

Oh, as somebody who hates illegal immigration and as somebody who corrects your false accusations, I'm now an apologist for criminals.

That's the logic of nicmarlo.

You're a dunce.

Name-calling is hardly a way to prove that you're right; neither is posting information which contradicts your own statements.

Illegal aliens, by definition, are criminals.
Employers who knowingly hire illegals are committing felonies, which, by definition, is criminal. Those are the people and actions, however, you defend. I do not.

And I think that difference between us speaks volumes.

But thanks for bumping the thread; lots more people will read through it and find out for themselves the lie called "border control" under this President.

Name-calling is hardly a way to prove that you're right;

You named called. I responded by calling you a name. If you want to be treated with respect, act respectful. It can't get any simpler than that.

neither is posting information which contradicts your own statements.

No I didn't.

Illegal aliens, by definition, are criminals. Employers who knowingly hire illegals are committing felonies, which, by definition, is criminal. Those are the people and actions, however, you defend. I do not.

I never once in any way shape of form defended the act of employers hiring illegal aliens.

Look, making false accusations and coming to false conclusions by definition is an obtuse thing to do. Those are the things that you do. I don't.

And I think that difference between us speaks volumes.

You bet.

But thanks for bumping the thread; lots more people will read through it and find out for themselves the lie called "border control" under this President.

Actually I don't think the president ever said the borders were under control.

People reading this thread will see things that contradict some of the misinformation directed at our president.

With all your bile, nic, maybe you could whip up a bile souffle.

Make it with an anger reduction.

Me: neither is posting information which contradicts your own statements.

You: No I didn't.

Yes you did....we disagree. What a surprise. Your position remains that the President is either beyond criticism for things he has said or failed to do. And, concerning that, we again disagree. Not a surprise.

As far as what you posted vs. what I posted, there is absolutely nothing you have posted which negates one fact I've posted and which is plainly obvious to anyone interested in the truth.

What's also apparent is that attempts to have an honest discussion with you is nothing more than an effort in futility.

What?

Nick I never once said that the president wasn't beyond cricism. One thing I did say was, making false accusations and coming to false conclusions by definition is an obtuse thing to do. Those are the things that apparently you do.

And you've done it again.

My thousands of posts on this forum have always been honest.

Once again making false accusations and coming to false conclusions by definition is an obtuse thing to do. Those are the things that apparently you do.

Nick, you think I can't have an honest discussion. I think that you can't have an intelligent discussion.

Give it a rest.

My comment #819 to you was deleted. Why's that, sinky? You can post nasty hit and runs to people, but you can't be asked a simple question?

I have no idea. I never saw it.

You're much too angry, nicky. Maybe some green tea with a butter cookie would make you feel better.

You posts on this forum speak for themselves. As do mine.
I'll let those whom I respect be the judge about each.

Maybe in the future, on some issue, we'll be able to find some common ground. Obviously we will not in this arena.

Hit and runs?
There's no rule that says a poster must stay on one thread.

You appear to be looking for a flame war.
I suggest you give it a rest.

"August 2, 2005 | Reporter:We've got these groups on the border called the Minutemen. They think you've called them vigilantes. Do you think they are vigilantes?

August 2, 2005 | President Bush: Well, this was -- I was in Waco when I decried potential vigilantism. I want to make it clear that this is before they even showed up, as I recall, and I wanted to make it clear that it was intolerable for people to take the law in their own hands, because we didn't want people showing up with guns."

An appropriate answer would have been "No, I think they're patriotic people doing a wonderful job of assisting our Border Patrol agents in locating those who are breaking the law by entering the country unlawfully."

Why did he start a sentence, stop, tell them where he was at the time, throw in 'as I recall', and all the rest? The question was: do you think the Minutemen are vigilantes? The answer meandered through a bunch of irrelevant factoids before coming to rest on a blanket, meaningless policy statement. Not surprisingly, it also shows the President's lack of respect for the Second Amendment. He didn't want people showing up with guns? Why not? People who are armed with firearms can't behave responsibly?

In any event, he made an accusation, he got slammed all over the place for it (from the MSM to FreeRepublic, and most other conservative venues) and he backtracked into a meaningless policy statement.

Of course he was calling the Minutemen vigilantes; he just got called on it and had to back off from slamming patriots in defense of criminals.
