Privately, Bush Says He Favors Citizenship (for Illegals)
AP ^ | April 26, 2006 | DAVID ESPO

Posted on 04/26/2006 5:20:12 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

President Bush generally favors plans to give millions of illegal immigrants a chance at U.S. citizenship without leaving the country, but does not want to be more publicly supportive because of opposition among conservative House Republicans, according to senators who attended a recent White House meeting.

Several officials familiar with the meeting also said Democrats protested radio commercials that blamed them for Republican-written legislation that passed the House and would make illegal immigrants vulnerable to felony charges.

Bush said he was unfamiliar with the ads, which were financed by the Republican National Committee, according to officials familiar with the discussions.

At another point, Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other members of his party pressed the president about their concern that any Senate-passed bill would be made unpalatable in final talks with the House.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat, said the lawmaker who would lead House negotiators, House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, had been "intractable" in negotiations on other high-profile bills in the past. Bush did not directly respond to the remark, officials said.

The Republican and Democratic officials who described the conversation did so Wednesday on condition of anonymity, saying they had not been authorized to disclose details.

Bush convened the session to give momentum to the drive for election-year immigration legislation, a contentious issue that has triggered large street demonstrations and produced divisions in both political parties. Senators of both parties emerged from the session praising the president's involvement and said the timetable was achievable.

"Yes, he thinks people should be given a path to citizenship," said Sen. Mel Martinez., R-Fla., a leading supporter of immigration legislation in the Senate.

I don't just blame GWB. There is alot of blame to go around. For the past twenty years there has been no effort to control this flood of illegal aliens.
NONE WHATSOEVER!

It's easy to say we'll just ship them all back, but I don't see how that could be done.
Someone called Shawn yesterday and suggested that every male must serve in the military for two years before getting citizenship.
That sounds like a good idea to me.

Bush didn't call the Minutemen vigilantes.

Please, don't try to rewrite history, it just makes you look dishonest and destroys any faith in the validity of future arguments you may

No you shouldn't rewrite history (It makes you look dopey).

From your link;

The logic of NJGent:If one is against vigilantes and if one is for enforcing the law in a rational way then one must be against the Minutemen.

BTW, I don't make arguments that depend on faith.

For the first time ever (yesterday), instead of emails, I sent physical letters to the President with copies to all my congress critters, demanding that current immigration law be enforced.....

Please people, get on this bandwagon!!!!

Also, we must stop the benefits of the 14th Admendant.
Which give citizenship to illegals born in the USA.
This bill was supposed to help children born to slaves after they became free.
It is being abused....big time.
Other countries have repealed the same kind if bill.

Thanks for the information. I cannot recall Ford Sr.

He was caught up in what was known as the Butcher Brothers Banking failures. Ford Sr was charged with bank fraud. He was one of the few involved who wasn't convicted. he banks were United American and a S&L called Southern Industrial Banking Corp. The S&L was uninsured. The banks were ran by two brothers Jake and C.H. Butcher. They basically were making bad loans to shell companies and shifting the paperwork between banks. A lot of people lost life savings in the S&L. Much of the loss came from the 1982 Worlds Fair as well. Greed was the rule in the whole venture and it was a major flop.

Lamar Alexander was governor at the time. Alexander has his own questionable dealings especially during his post governor times. Between the Worlds Fair and a project with a magazine giant Knoxville taxpayers were left with a huge debt.

Name the people here who are FOR open borders.

I doubt that there are such people. But I think that there are plenty of people here who would announce for open borders if W. did. And, they would claim that it was a brilliant move.

Absolutely. The cognitive dissonance of the Bush fringers has risen to unprecidented levels lately.

Bush ran on the Iraq war.

You just shot your credibility there. There was no Iraq war in 2000 when one of Bush's campagn planks was normalizing the immigrants who were here illegally. I knew about it back then, where were you?

The WOT delayed his tackling the problem, but he's doing exactly what he said he would do in 2000.

The game changed on 9/11/01.

The game was delayed on 9/11. It's obviously is time to resume the immigration issue where 2001 left off.

Make no mistake about it if the GOP doesn't stand firm on no amnesty, go home and apply legally, and a secure border it will loose both houses 2006 & the Oval Office in 2008.

Unfortunatly, the perscription of "no amnesty" will result in the status quo being maintained. And the illegals that will continue to come here will remain unassimilated (why should they? they're "illegal") and will only be a bigger problem later.

Politics is a horse trade game. If we're to significantly seal the border, then it will requre compromising in a way that will be labeled "amnesty" by the border teetotalers. So there will be no compromise, and the border will remain open, just as it is today. Like Social Security, it will be fixed "someday".

I guess many of his base are just plan stupid. They must have had some dumb idea he would do the will of the people.

Bill Clinton was a "will of the people" president. He did everything his polsters said the "people" wanted.

I much prefer an honest candidate to do what he says he will do. Even if he isn't "perfect".

Point is, it's decision time, and he knows how conservatives feel about amnesty (excuse me, guest workers)!

Name one elected politician who's against "guest workers."

All of them address guest workers as part of their plans including Tancredo.

I want ENFORCEMENT FIRST, before any talk of paths to citizenship.

Bush is not the only Republican that has lost their support. We will not fair well in November. (06 or 08 imho) Dems have great footage of wetbacks streaming across the border and african americans wading through Katrina's backwash. It is not going to be a pretty campaign....and I am not voting Republican. May not vote at all. Have not been this disgusted in the last 40 years of the struggle.

For every whacko WE lose, we'll pick up a conservative Democrat who is as fed up with HIS kooks are we are with ours.

In other words, you wish to drive the GOP to the left.

What you said.

And why must private employees of Mohawk Carpet in Dalton Georgia bring RICO action against Mohawk because of their hiring and maintaing of illegals. Where is Gonzales? Out rounding up child molesters? Finally? Well a little more PR helps I guess when you are 33% in the polls..We'll see.

Bush explicitly endorsed a path to citizenship for illegals in his speech in Irvine the other day.

What a clear display of Bush Jr.s dereliction. He's basically stopped enforcing the law because he doesn't like it. Our sovereign status vis-a-vis Mexico clearly offends him.
