President Bush generally favors plans to give millions of illegal immigrants a chance at U.S. citizenship without leaving the country, but does not want to be more publicly supportive because of opposition among conservative House Republicans, according to senators who attended a recent White House meeting.
Several officials familiar with the meeting also said Democrats protested radio commercials that blamed them for Republican-written legislation that passed the House and would make illegal immigrants vulnerable to felony charges.
Bush said he was unfamiliar with the ads, which were financed by the Republican National Committee, according to officials familiar with the discussions.
At another point, Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other members of his party pressed the president about their concern that any Senate-passed bill would be made unpalatable in final talks with the House.
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat, said the lawmaker who would lead House negotiators, House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, had been "intractable" in negotiations on other high-profile bills in the past. Bush did not directly respond to the remark, officials said.
The Republican and Democratic officials who described the conversation did so Wednesday on condition of anonymity, saying they had not been authorized to disclose details.
Bush convened the session to give momentum to the drive for election-year immigration legislation, a contentious issue that has triggered large street demonstrations and produced divisions in both political parties. Senators of both parties emerged from the session praising the president's involvement and said the timetable was achievable.
"Yes, he thinks people should be given a path to citizenship," said Sen. Mel Martinez., R-Fla., a leading supporter of immigration legislation in the Senate.

Yep, that's me, poster of the bleeding obvious. :^P
That you equate gun control with immigration, just shows how out of touch you are.
Yea .. well they best calm down and get their heads on straight because it will cost them listeners
Which I believe is was the Dems are hoping for .. to kill off as much conservative talk radio as they can
No kidding?
Then whose posts are these?
Yikes...the illegal immigration apologists seem to have completely overtaken this thread.
and
Great. I get back from the gym and see this wonderful headline. So, how are the anti-borders folks spinning this unsurprising revelation?
I did say that a lot of folks, while not supporting open borders outright, support policies that achieve close to the same result.
Link the post where you were so gracious, can you?
At any rate, I don't see why every opinion that you don't agree with has to be met with the same overly dramatic charge of "lying".
Because you insinuate that people who don't agree with you word for word are WRONG and are for open borders.
That is, in fact, a lie.
If you ask me, the people behind the mikes are doing a good job of shooting themselves in the foot.
This guy is normally level headed and doesn't normally go over the cliff
I don't always agree with him .. but I do have a lot of respect for him and his show
But lately .. I just can't take it and tonight I just turned off the radio and walked away
Now, please remember what the powers of the president REALLY are, and don't go off into flights of fancy, on me, when replying to my queries.
The ones that are screaming the loudest aren't Republicans.
And they are no different, IMO, than the Democrats; they will do anything to hurt the GOP, in hopes of getting THEIR power back; it's the old "Let's Teach "Em A Lesson" ploy.
---Apparently you think that the only "Free" here applies to you and your beliefs.---
Where do you come up with this stuff? It was you just now telling me to shut up.
I've been doing a LOT of that ( turning off the radio ), for months, now. :-(
I totally agree and the Dems are loving it
OMG, don't tell them that! Their entire world will collapse!
If you're going to sit home and not vote, why keep telling us about it?
Do you hope somebody will talk you out of it?
I can't wait until they take the jobs of all the RNC operatives. I'm sure they will do it for less, as well and who cares about the law anyway.
We can thank Bush for a miminum of 30 million more Dem voters who will take to the streets on cue.
Post #446 is my "gracious" post, though that needs to be read in context. You can do it.
You and me both. I listen to Medved and Prager when I can, but the others really irritate me.
Well, It's off to bed for me. Nite allKeep the faith.
The man I voted for POTUS in 2000? Well you can thank the man a some of his associates for the GOP coming to power to start with. The ones who formed the Conservative movement in 1979 and early 80's.
Thanks, but I'm very happy that we have Justice Roberts and Alito on the Supreme court right now.
Is it not a bit early too celebrate just yet? Get back with me in a year or two on that one. I'm not saying they weren't good choices or were. I want to see their decisions over the course of a term or so.
I'm very happy that the Middle East looks quite a bit different than it did in 2000 with emerging democracies, and I very pleased with the reduction in income tax.
I'm not for cutting taxes when it increases debt. We are in the Middle East thanks largely to the blunder of one man who wrote an EO prohibiting the assassination of foreign heads of state. The POTUS doing so was Jerry Ford and followed by Carter who wrote the same as well as Reagan. The difference in the three was Reagan went after Kadafhy. But the result of the FORD EO made it possible for thugs like Kadafhy, Amin, Arafat, Komenhi, and all the other Hitler spawn to support terrorism without fear for their lives. As a result during the late 70's terrorism prospered and by the mid 80's was rampant.
As for M.E, policy? Too many blunders. Yemen not attacked. Yemen prisoners who bombed a US Navy ship now free. Ships being berthed and repaired in UAE. just to name a few IMO these are critical issues. BTW I'd rather see our military rebuilt to a level of strength beyond that of Bill Clinton's numbers. Not one significant raise in End Troop Strength numbers since 1996. No not even now and our nation is at war.
Now if that's all liberal to you, than go find a country that's more conservative.
I've seen ones that were communist than you enough which is why I fight against it taking hold here as well. You can never understand what the Bush Immigration plan will accomplish unless you look at it from the likelyhood of a clash of cultures. Three to be exact. I've also seen a lot of the culture Bush wishes to invite here to take over the South West USA. How about you taking them back home and showing them a better way of government instead. I'm sure they'll join you in the fight against government corruption.
Nighty night; pleasant dreams......................
