It's not your typical boy scout project, but then again, 15-year-old Joey Ricketts is not your typical boy scout.
Joey has spent the better part of his life in the Scouts, and when it came time for his eagle scout project...
Joey Ricketts, Boy Scout: "I know that a lot of people have done a lot for the World Trade Center and I know the Pentagon is from our state and so I thought it would be nice to do a monument to the Pentagon."
But this is not just a project to Joey, it's something more personal.
Joey's dad explains how he found a local tie to the 9/11 Pentagon attacks at American Legion Post 16 in Lynchburg.
Bobby Ricketts, Joey's Father: "There's a member here that lost his son in the Pentagon... Joey's also going to dedicate the memorial to him."
For now, the memorial is a work in progress.
Joey's already spent more than a year on it, all the while hoping for a missing piece of the puzzle.
A piece that came to him just this week from Linda Carroll, who was a complete stranger before now.
Linda learned about Joey through our media partner, The Lynchburg News & Advance.
She was reading an article about him when she saw the one thing he wanted was a piece of the Pentagon and she realized she could contribute to this project.
Linda Carroll, Gave Piece of Pentagon: "I had a piece of the Pentagon that I'd been given as a going away gift after one of my summer jobs there and I wasn't using and I thought Joey could use it if he wanted to and I'm happy for him to have it."
Joey: "We've been looking for one for a long time and now have one to put on top of the monument."
The monument costs almost $7,500.
Joey has raised about half of that, but still needs donations.
If you would like to help, send donations to:
