I called our local newspaper last week after reading of another incidence of stolen SS# from a business data file that should have not had access to them.

I was interviewed by telephone by the reporter.

Why would a cashier ask for your social security number?

Well, there's no law that says you have to have a SSN (Slave Surveillance Number). Give Social Security a call and ask them. The hospital will tell you that you have to have one assigned to your child before they leave the hospital.

Up until just a few years ago, your drivers' license number in the Commonwealth of Virginia WAS your SSN. It was that way in 1997 when I moved out, and changed sometime between then and last year when I moved back. So, since most people put their drivers' license number on their checks, we were walking around with our SSNs on our checks, for everyone to see.

In the IRS instructions this year, they requested we put both our SSN's on our check, paying the taxes we owe.

I did not follow these instructions. Instead, I attached a note -- telling the IRS that I will not put my SSN on my checks.

A few years back, my daughter's dentist retired. I found another and called to make her an appointment. The first words out of the receptionist's mouth were "What is your and her Social Security number?"

I have encountered businesses that want both your Drivers license and your SSN when you pay with a check. I live in a state that used to use SSNs on DLs, that's where the practice started. The theory was if you passed a bad check it would make it easier to find you. It has always been a short lived thing, so many protest that the business stops asking.

Well, maybe all the illegals will give their employers my social security number and when I retire I'll discover that, based upon the amount put in, I will recieve $50,000 a month benefit checks!
