If you want to know what was so important to them, read the CIA analyst Charles Duelfer's report about WMDs. If he's right, then this is actually such a sad war that our soldiers and the Iraqi people are dying because of misperceptions built on lies. Here's a different take on the whole thing from (of all places) the liberal mecca of San Francisco. Turns out the critics of the war might have been right but not in the way they thought they were. Good food for thought anyway (if you're open minded enough to finally stop looking for WMDs that aren't there, probably not in Syria either).

Dude, you're new here and probably a democrat. The real point of being in Iraq is to kill as many terrorists over there rather than to have them try to kill us over here. WMD's probably did exist and that is my opinion against your opinion. That was never the main premise for going in for anyone. We are really putting our boots on their throats pure and simple.
