The more I listen to the President, the more I am convinced he's the GOP Clinton. Words don't mean what they appear to be. Amnesty means something else. Its like changing the label on a wine bottle and the abuse of the English language is akin to a form of insulting us - and our national intelligence. When the President says our laws against illegal immigration can't be enforced, that's a good reason to impeach him right then and there. His malfeasant failure to do so may be rewarded as early as next year by the Democrats, albeit for different reasons. The American people are not asking for the moon - they want illegal aliens deported and our borders secured. Our President appears to have a communication problem as well as courting a political death wish, if his reception in Irvine, California on Monday is any depth of the fact he has virtually no friends from the base in the party standing along beside him on this issue.

He only considers a blanket decision to put those people on an "automatic path toward citizenship" amnesty.

Yes. He calls them "new Americans".

THE "NEW AMERICAN"

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. What is extremely sad is that the illegal alien offenders have done nothing good for this country and has caused this GREAT NATION to be divided.

To allow a bunch of third world country nationals to divide Americans is unconscionable!

No they don't. They want the borders secured, but do support a guest worker program. No poll that I've seen supports a wholesale deportation of illegals.

You people calling for Bush's impeachment are a blight on this website and on the GOP.

"But one thing we can't lose sight of is that we are talking about human beings, decent human beings."

The current Senate immigration proposal would NOT exclued felons from the amnesty. Dingy Harry Reid killed that bill to prevent amendments that would exclude felons.

"Amnesty" isn't the confusing word, we all understand the word, it's that deceitful little word "is" that presents the trickery, as in: amnesty "is".

I believe we know exactly what the meaning of "is" is this time, it's "si" written backwards.

As a supporter of President Bush, I am appalled by his statements.
I, as do almost all Americans, welcome legal immigration, but I cannot tolerate the flouting of our immigration laws. One difference separates the United States from Latin America: a inbred and organic respect for the law that stems from before the founding of this country. As a general rule, in Mexico and in the rest of Latin America the law is evaded or ignored by those who have power and those who don't.
While it is true that at times during the history of this country the deliberate flouting of the law has been approved, that approval is the exception that proves the rule. Martin Luther King, Jr violated state laws that sanctioned de jure segregation but was careful to adhere to federal law and court decisions. More importantly, King violated the law in the name of a higher law: his rights as an American citizen for equal treatment under the law.
Those who enter this country illegally make no such lofty claim; in fact, they make no claim of rights at all. They enter this country for the crassest of all reasons: to make money.

On immigration enforcement, I don't this Bush - Clinton comparisson is fair...to Clinton

Under Clinton, worksite immigration-violation arrests weren't great, considering the size of the problem, but they were about 20 times greater than under Bush, who has basically stopped worksite enforcement.

Worksite Arrests (immigration violators):

Clinton Presidency, first four years, :
1993 8,027
1994 7,630
1995 7,554
1996 10,014
Total 33,325

Best year was 1997 with 17,554 worksite arrests

Bush Presidency, first four years:
2001 735
2002 485
2003 445
2004 159
Total 1,824

Best year was 2001 with 735 worksite arrests
