LONDON, April 26 (IranMania) - Thousands of religious hardliners chanting "Death to America" gathered in Iran's central desert to celebrate a failed US hostage rescue mission 26 years ago, AFP reported.
The anniversary of the US military debacle came amid a mounting war of words with Washington, reported to be mulling the use of force to rein in the Islamic republic's disputed nuclear programme.
Iranian officials used the occasion to tell US leaders that they risked yet more "divine intervention" if they dared to again set foot on Iranian soil.
"The Tabas incident should act as a reminder to US statesmen. They should not test us when they know the consequences," the hardline speaker of the Iranian parliament, Gholam Ali Hadad-Adel, told MPs.
According to the report, in the early hours of April 25, 1980, a commando of 90 US special forces aboard six C-130 cargo planes and eight helicopters headed for Iran to try to free the hostages held at the US embassy in Tehran.
The helicopters had been due to land close to the seized embassy, but the operation turned into a disaster when the desert rendevous point, near the city of Tabas some 400 kilometres (250 miles) southeast of Tehran, was whipped by a sandstorm.
The operation, codenamed Eagle Claw, resulted in the deaths of eight US servicemen and was quickly abandoned. Its failure also contributed to the subesequent election defeat of then US president Jimmy Carter.

I will never forget, you puke!
Sick pukes. Eff 'em.
I can always feel a bit of pride because my first presidential vote was for Gerry Ford (whom I really didn't like that much).
Even back then I figured Carter to be a weak character and a person unfit to be President despite my lack of enthusiasm for former Pres. Ford.
p.s. I was not old enough to vote for Ronald Reagan in the 1976 primaries.
They ought to call it Carterfest 2006
And we will mark the day that the USN sank the Iranian Navy.
Unless action is taken before next year, this looks like a good place to test another MOAB on April 26, 2007.
At least some good came out of it.
Jimmy Carter, the weakest link.
His blunderings empowered and gave rise to Islamofacism.
Carter should rot in hell for his negligence and gross incompetence. He will grace the halls of eternity along with his ilk, Clinton, Kennedy and the disgusting like.
Seem like a parallel demonstration in the U.S. with nostalgic chanting of "Dump Carter" might be in order.
Thank goodness we need not fear the bunny or anything even more sinister anymore.
You missed lbj, who caused much more internal damage.
Before the war with the filthy moose is over, Carter will have more blood on his hands than Mao, Stalin or Hitler.
You missed lbj, who caused much more internal damage.

True -- my oversight. The Dems just have the magic midas touch when it comes to destroying everything they touch.
The enemies of our country celebrate something a past president did, it speaks volumes about the Carter Legacy.
There are a couple of good articles on Operation Eagle Claw here and here.
Carter was notorious (if not infamous) for abusing his power as CiC. He micro-managed military affairs down to the point of determining how many people would go in and what they would do when they got there.
He was worse than Clinton ("No Apaches because they make too much noise" - before the Black Hawk Down raid in Somalia).
He's scum.
