Iran urges new Iraqi government to end occupation

TEHRAN, April 25 (Reuters) - Iran's president urged newly appointed Iraqi Prime Minister Jawad al-Maliki to form a new government that would end the U.S. occupation of Iraq, the official IRNA news agency said on Tuesday.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the comments in a telephone call to congratulate Maliki on his appointment.

Maliki has four weeks to form a government of national unity, widely seen as the only way to halt sectarian violence.

The United States accuses Iran fuelling of sectarian violence in Iraq, a charge dismissed by Tehran, which says the presence of U.S. troops is to blame.

"The formation of (Iraq's) new government must pave the way for the exit of the occupiers," Ahmadinejad said in the telephone conversation, IRNA reported.

U.S. President George W. Bush has said American troops will not withdraw until Iraqi security forces are able to take over.

Iran and Iraq fought a bloody war from 1980-88 and, until Saddam Hussein was toppled by the U.S. invasion in 2003, had a frosty relationship.

"The Iranian nation will support the Iraqi people and Iraq's popular government," Ahmadinejad said.

Iranian and U.S. officials have said they would hold talks to discuss Iraq, but no date has been set and on Monday Ahmadinejad said such a meeting was not necessary now that the Iraqi government was being formed.

Both sides had said any such talks would only cover Iraq, although some analysts said it could open a conduit for discussion of other issues, particularly the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme.

The United States accuses Iran of seeking to develop atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

Hey, Iraq, get those imperialistic Americans out so we can come in and try to take over. Hurry, please, we are getting impatient to establish the new Islamic Empire. Did we say empire? Oh, sorry! Error.

Is it me or does it seem that every reporter in the world is salivating to report every utterance of Ahmadinejad?

I can't remember a world leader quoted so incessantly.

I thought the occupation ended over a year ago when the provisional government was sworn in and they asked us to stay to assist with security. At any time they can ask us to leave. Maybe that is the problem I can think rationally whereas the nutbars running Iran cannot.

All of our western publications leave out the quotes that would otherwise show us the real seriousness of the situation. Most of what we see makes Ahmadinejad look like a good guy in comparison. Many investors/political contributors are afraid of going into Iran and don't want to see much sentiment in favor of military action in Iran. Have a look at the following for some quotes that we really should be seeing in context with the Sudan meeting (about Iran giving nuclear technology to Sudan).
