Bush slammed for charging Hu protester

Pastors: Administration 'hypocritical' for throwing book at woman

Some Christian leaders are protesting the Bush administration decision to seek up to six months in federal prison for Wenyi Wang, the woman who shouted at the president and Chinese leader Hu Jintao at the White House last week.

At the event, Wang, who got access to the White House grounds as a media representative with a Chinese opposition paper, shouted, "President Bush, stop him (President Hu) from persecuting Falun Gong" and "President Bush, stop him from killing."

In Chinese, the woman shouted, "President Hu, your days are numbered."

Tomorrow morning, representatives from the Christian Defense Coalition and the National Clergy Council will hold a news conferences at Georgetown University that coincides with a conference on religious freedom and tolerance there.

"We are extremely disappointed that the Bush administration is bringing charges against Dr. Wenyi Wang that may result in her spending six months in federal prison," said the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, in a statement.

"Her crime? Shouting out for President Bush to help stop the killing and religious persecution of Falun Gong. We believe these federal charges are sending a horrible message to the worldwide community concerning America's commitment to protecting religious freedom and liberties.

"It seems extremely hypocritical for the White House to roll out the red carpet for a world leader whose government supports the trampling and crushing of human rights. And, at the same time pursue prison time for a women fighting to end religious persecution and violence. Our message is clear: President Bush, support religious freedom and the First Amendment, and drop all charges against Dr. Wang."

Commented the Rev. Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council: "With all due respect to President Bush, this incident demands leniency. This is an extraordinary case. Wenyi Wang was persecuted by one of the last totalitarian communist regimes left on Earth. Communist China is an enemy of the United States, and Hu Jintao embodies one of the worst, most abusive and morally bankrupt regimes in the history of the human race. Wenyi Wang had proper press credentials to be where she was. Her only crime was to interrupt Chinese President Hu Jintao, the chief of this illegitimate, murderous, repressive and repugnant government.

"The Catholic, Evangelical, Orthodox and Protestant church leaders of the National Clergy Council appeal to President Bush and federal prosecutors to drop these charges. The president should reinforce the inalienable God-give rights of Wenyi Wang, not accommodate the harsh ego of a cruel dictator."

After emerging from a hearing at U.S. district court in Washington Friday, Wang said of her act: "It's not a crime but an act of civil disobedience."

First, be clear that I support what this lady said to Hu. My problem is with the time, place and manner of the statements offered. She was not credentialed to speak at the event, and should not have done so. My concern with what she did is not content-related, contrary to the apparent position taken by most others on this thread. If we are to allow her to do this, then we must be prepared to let those with positions we disagree with shout down other speakers at official events.

I don't have a serious problem with them removing her from the event. Prosecuting her for what they're prosecuting her for, however, is way out of line. When you look at the actual charges brought against her, it very much is content-related.

in this country no man, not even the president, is above the law.

Really? Seems current and past Presidents think otherwise.

FROST: But when you said, as you said when we were talking about the Huston Plan, you know, "If the president orders it, that makes it legal", as it were: Is the president in that sense—is there anything in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights that suggests the president is that far of a sovereign, that far above the law?

NIXON: No, there isn't. There's nothing specific that the Constitution contemplates in that respect. I haven't read every word, every jot and every title, but I do know this: That it has been, however, argued that as far as a president is concerned, that in war time, a president does have certain extraordinary powers which would make acts that would otherwise be unlawful, lawful if undertaken for the purpose of preserving the nation and the Constitution, which is essential for the rights we're all talking about. © 1977 by The New York Times Company. We all used to support Bush. He betrayed us. We may be winning in Iraq, but what does it matter? Terrorists march through the streets of New York. Illegals claiming our land for Mexico. Our government Kow Towing to the Chinazis at every turn. No new domestic oil, an open border, our ports owned by China. Call this national security? His approval ratings are plummeting because the liberals still hate him and his own base has left him. This is just another example. Bush started out decently, but other than his deal with India, his second term has accomplished nothing. He should never have invited Hu Hitler here, it just legitimizes his brutal regime, and did nothing to redress China's economic warfare against us, and then he will not protect this woman, when liberals heckle with impunity, under the claim of "free speech". Of course he will not protect her, less we offend our Chinese masters. I though we learned form appeasement in WWII, but apparently not.

Maybe we should stage her a fake death. And then she can come back next season.

I've read most of the replies on this thread and agree with most of them. What some (or most) don't understand is that our President is a NWO type of guy. Now, that's fine, if you're a NWO type of person. I'm not.

If you look at NAFTA, CAFTA, and a myriad of known or unkown agreements/treaties made by our sitting gubbmint...the recent USSC recent decisions, the "McKinney's" getting off with, well, nothing, sitting Sinators who would be in prison if we were them...should I go on?.......No, I won't. I'll excersize my right and vote all the bastards out...sometime within the next 2-6 years....BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!...yeah...right..."vote'em'out!. Thanks Rush and Sean and all the other rich talking heads for letting me know what I need to do..

"China must be placated, if only for the lopsided trade arrangement and their lopsided value of the yen....."---NWO types

ahhh, I waste my breath and time.

SHAME ON PRESIDENT BUSH! Yeah, if calling a dictator a butcher is a violation of diplomatic etiquette, so be it. The last thing our country ought to be doing is enforcing for Red China THEIR campaign against the Falun Gong and other Chinese who seek freedom.

You must be joking. Bush invited this Nazi thug here. He will do nothing to fight China. Only the Pentagon is attempting to fight the Chinese regime, the our civil government including Bush has completely sold out. Only the military is on our side it seems.

These Bush hating Freepers are grating my nerves.

I don't hate President Bush. I just think I have a pretty good idea of where he, and the majority of our elected, and some not elected (blackrobes etc), officials are headed. BTW, Hablo espanol? (You better learn) Can you spell "borders"? How's your credit rating? Are you ready for a cashless society? Do you know, really know, what marxism is? (You're witnessing it this very day).

Feh!

When China holds hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. Treasury securities and runs an enormous trade surplus with our country, Wenyi Wang is worse than Cindy Sheehan, at least in the eyes of our leaders. We were made very aware in the last decade of the ties Chinese businessmen and companies cultivated with Democratic politicians.

So there are some people here on FR who understands.

I do not doubt that they work both sides of the aisle.

See! Ahh, someone who knows what duplicity is and the roles of GoodCop/BadCop.

Weng Wengyi's real crime was to embarrass the President by being impertinent enough to say China's Hu is a Communist thug. I was proud of her - it took guts to go up and say it.

None of us have any idea of what is going on with China in the background. I include myself, of course, among those who don't know. I have read the word "betrayed" applied to the president in this thread and it is unwarranted, at least without some proof, IMO. Who knows what sort of deal on terrorism, oil or something else that is being negotiated behind closed doors.

I have disagreed with President Bush on occasion (education is a good example), but one thing I have seen from this administration repeatedly is allowing opponents to climb out on limbs and then sawing them off.

In any event, it was right to arrest this lady for disrupting a state event, whether you agree with her or not (and I do).

He can order them to drop the charges, to say nothing of his power to grant reprieves and pardons

Why on earth would he order someone to drop charges? Pardons and reprieves are another thing altogether and more in keeping with the PROPER coarse for a president to take in such situations.

Because in this case, the charges are bogus. She was charged with harassing and threatening a foreign official, which is totally preposterous.

Yes.

I don't know much about Weng Wengyi, I know some about Hu (a Communist thug), and I know a lot about the NWO movement....2+2 still equals 4, until that gets changed.

Best not anger the powers that be.........

Feh!

As far a betrayed, I mean his base and supporters, not the country. If we had known what was going to happen there is no way he would get reelected. We may not know the details, but deals with China are simply stupid, so why Bush does it is beyond me. Th current situation is favorable to China, they will never willingly agree to anything that helps us. China is a terrorist supporter, asking them for help against terror is like asking Iran for help. Moreover we hold all the cards. There are plenty of other countries with cheap labor (India, Indonesia, Mexico, etc.) but no other country with our size of a market. We should place heavy tariffs, or even an embargo on China, we could get our goods elsewhere, or even make them ourselves, but China would be devastated. In a trade war we can only win, we should be confronting China aggressively not appeasing them. What our government is doing is ridiculously stupid, making me doubt whose side the are really on. Bush appears to be a new Chamberlain, when we should hit China, while we still have the upper hand.

>>>Why should it have to be handled discreetly? That is diametrically counter to the foundation of this Nation.<<<

Yes, it is. Having said that, we all know that it is possible to go to hell being right. I do it all the time!
Why this protester was wrong, IMHO, is that she put President Bush in a position whereby he had to apologize to Evil Hu, if only as a diplomatic courtesy. I really hated seeing that, since Hu is openly antagonistic towards the Bush White House and the United States.

Hu knows that his country, a Communist country, needs a larger share of the world's oil supply. Thanks to NAFTA and Nixon, Clinton and MFN status, the Communist Chinese are sneaking in the back door on this issue. The lady who screamed at Hu deflected that issue, as far as I could tell.

Communist China's leader did not get a State Dinner from the Bush White House. That was the absolutely right thing to do...then creepy Bill Gates goes and kisses up to him, which is pretty disloyal and more telling, not at all in any way, in the best interests of the United States. I always wonder if Bill Gates has a mini-Me.
