Report: UC gave many top execs unapproved compensation

OAKLAND - The University of California gave most of its top executives extra bonuses, car allowances or other compensation that wasn't approved by the governing board of regents, according to a report presented today by the university's outside auditors.

In fact, the audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that the UC system gave more than two-thirds of its top managers extra pay or benefits as an exception to university policies or procedures without approval from the regents.

And much of that pay was never disclosed to the public as required by the regents' policies. While UC's Office of the President was supposed to send reports to the regents each year detailing the total compensation for its top executives, UC fell two years behind in producing the reports. And the reports it did send to the regents were riddled with omissions, auditors found.

UC regents ordered the independent audit after the Chronicle reported late last year that many UC employees received more money or benefits than were reported to the public, including some that appeared to violate university policies.

The audit included the people who held the top 32 senior management positions at UC from 1996 to 2005, plus one additional executive, for a total of 64 people.

This is only the tip of the iceberg and only covers from 1996 thru 2005.

These are not obscene salaries or benefits. These are a few hard-working educators attempting to compensate for a lack of education funding. Our oil company executives should strive to emulate our poor, noble educators.

I do believe that this has been going on out there for years and no one has been fire yet, just a few years back there was something about hundred's of thousands spent on flowers and charged to the Us. Doesn't this outfit also run the nuclear labs in Mexico where million were miss spent and no one was fired.

This is much ado about nothing.
This is all protected by the constitutional right to privacy.
(end sarcasm)

It is amazing how many new buildings and higher salaries get done
in the UC system.
Especially seeing how the state is bankrupt.
All I can think is the UC system is doing it with some sort of
trick involving smoke, mirrors and research-grade lasers.
