I guess I don't understand your question - there's an apple orchard near your home but there's "a large crop of Mexicans there"?
Yea makes a lot of sense doesn't it. Plenty of Mexicans but no apples and the trees in unmaintained condition. That means the ownwer wasn't paying them not at least from the crops anyway.
