Paving the way for a socialist state, by whatever means possible, is pretty much all that matters to these people.
The Left used to understand that if they weaken the country, they'll never get what they want - rather, it would be destroyed by an invader.
Old Labour Party stalwarts like Ernest Bevin understood this well - he was a socialist, but as tough on the Soviet Union as anyone.
The Left will not stand up and fight the enemies of civilisation any longer, rather, they want to surrender to these enemies, and will grasp hold of any shred of virtue they see in their way of life.

Exactly!! And at all, ALL costs as well. Listening to Ted Kennedy on Meet the Depressed this weekend was a real hoot. He as much as stated that it was time to forget 9/11, i.e. stop living in the "culture of fear" as he called it, so that we can get back to the things that were "really important." You know, socialized medicine, excess profit taxes, increasing income taxes on anyone making income, eliminating the home mortgage deduction, etc.
Yep, Socialism is more important that anything and everything to Ted and his party. I have this feeling that to most Americans 9/11 was a tradgedy because 3,000 people died and it was shocking the degree to which we had ignored foreign policy and national security for too long. To Ted Kennedy, 9/11 was a tradgedy because 3,000 people died and DAMN!!! now national security and foreign policy would become important again interrupting his plans for socialized medicine.
