Iran says nuclear enrichment work irreversible

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will not abandon its work on uranium enrichment, which the United Nations has demanded be halted, even if faced with threats, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

"Iran's uranium enrichment and nuclear research and development activities are irreversible," Hamid Reza Asefi said.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is due to submit a report by an April 28 deadline on whether Iran is complying with a U.N. demand that it halt enrichment, which Western nations say is being used to develop nuclear atomic weapons.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is purely civilian.

"If the report contains expert assessment, there will be nothing left to worry about," Asefi told a weekly news conference.

"However, if the report comes out and somehow puts pressure on Iran or speaks with a language of threats, naturally Iran will not abandon its rights and it is prepared for all possible situations and has planned for it," he said.

Iran says its enrichment work includes developing advanced P-2 centrifuges which can enrich uranium faster than its existing P-1 units. The earlier announcement that it was pressing ahead with the P-2 programme raised further concerns in the West.

"So far, we have never used P-2 centrifuges, and what we have used is P-1 machines. We have informed the agency (IAEA) about that," Asefi said.

This is going to drag out for a long time. They have the right to enrich uranium for peacefull purposes as well as create and use radio isotopes in medical arena etc..
This crap head and his Mullah supporters (not all of them are seeing eye to eye these days), some how have to be overthrown.
It is difficult to imagine for the next few years where the US would attempt to destroy all their known nuclear facilities. And I do not say that lightly or on a whim.
I am not against a total dismembering of their facilities, so don't get me wrong. I just don't see it happening.
To many players with different levels of fear to work at getting any form of backing for such a mission.
On the other hand. I realize there is no big chance for a regime change. Ahmadinejah continues to put new levels of control in place to assure him and his backers, no one will be able to rebel with success. Much like what Saddam did.
If only all nations would go for a very very tough economic sanction program, then they might be forced to play ball.

Oh I don't know, the U.N. usually is tooting their own horn in one way or another....

Sorry, just couldn't resist that. ;)
