The United States appealed anew to Russia yesterday to stop the sale of air-defense missile systems to Iran, but Moscow reiterated its intention to proceed with the deal.
The public dispute underscored the considerable difficulty still confronting the Bush administration as it looks for ways to intensify international pressure on Iran to abandon its nuclear program.
At a news conference in Washington yesterday, the State Department's third-highest-ranking officer, R. Nicholas Burns, said the time has come for countries "to use their leverage with Iran" and halt exports of weapons and nuclear-related technologies. He singled out the sale of 29 Tor-M1 air-defense missile systems to Iran under a $700 million contract announced by Russia in December.
"There are no circumstances that would obstruct fulfillment of our obligations in military-technical cooperation with Iran," said Nikolai Spassky, the deputy head of the Kremlin's Security Council. "This goes for all the obligations we have made, including the commitment to provide Iran with Tor-M1 air defense systems."

They weren't our friend then...we just had a common enemy.
Well, at least they said they'd stay neutral in any conflict with Iran.
/sarcasm
Surprise surprise.
Russia has two global interests: increaing its own power and trying to decrease ours, and they will do everything they can to accomplish both, including aiding terrorists.
Russia might be more dangerous to us now than they were in the cold war, because many Americans, including some politicians, now trust them.
Amen. The Cold War is now reborn..if it ever truly died.
The cold war was tame compared to what we have staring us in the face now: madmen living without defined borders and nations like Russia and China willing to help them reach their goals.
Yep but at least we know who the backers of the islamic WMD programs are. So if the worse possible scenerio happens its time for MAD for both of them.
Yes, agreed, but I was pointing directly at Russia. However, your argument has more creedance given that Russia now tends to play the game by operating vicariously through such extremist regimes.
Agreed in part. But how do you deal with thousands of suicide bombers, or others who may be ready to release deadly chemical or biological agents over here if we make a move against Iran. It's impossible to contain these lunatics, and countries like Russia don't make matters any easier.
BTTT.
So if the worse possible scenerio happens its time for MAD for both of them.==
You are MAD really. You propose to sacrifice America to get Russia or China?
Iranian aiatollas would be pleased. What they need now is just to provoke USA and WW3 garanteed. All infidels will go down in flames.
Oh good, lol...I get the chance to finally ask what does BTTT mean? Yeah, I'm a newbie.
Russia has NEVER been a friend of the U.S. or the West...save for WWII.==
I think that truth is simplier then that. United States blocked Russia membership in WTO and refused to cancel Jeckson-Venik amendment.
Recently Russia asked US for that. US turned her down. Probably now Russia doesn't miss opportunity to repay.
Welcome to the forum!
This was their plan all along. Regroup and reorganize after the Cold War and pretend to be America's friend. Russia is investing in the future. Almost all their women got graduate degrees in nuclear physics or something.
Thank you, I appreciate it. I'm only new as a Freeper, quite unlike my age and convictions...lol.
BTTT
I hope that means of forcibly cutting these supply lines are being developed. If we do find ourselves attacking Iran, this materiel transfer must be stopped -- permanently.
