Am I in Mexico or what?
That looks like the canned good labels at the grocery store and the new menu at McD's. No idea what it says but from the looks of things, I'll soon have to learn.
The invaders need to know when it's time for more to invade to get their amnesty. On the Plus side than there will be no need for the anchorbrat provision. Things are getting so much better for all mexicans and so much worse for all American TAXPAYER VOTERS! SI?
No. The "new America".
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. My Bush Epiphany By Lawrence Auster
The bastards don't even have a link to the English version. Sort of like when you are on a street or on line at the store and they are talking spanish all around you - being rude.
Quick and dirty translation...

Press zero and say, I must have the wrong number I am in the United States trying to blah blah blah. Make a real person explain.
Yes, the White House website is also available in Spanish. If you go to:
http://www.whitehouse.gov
However, you get the English site. You have to deliberately click the "Espanol" link to view the Spanish-language version.
In my opinion, the White House website should be translated into all the common languages on this planet. It's full of news and contains all of President Bush's speeches. Imagine that people in other countries could simply click in to read the White House web site.
Nobody's being forced to see the site in Spanish.
I speak and read Spanish...yet disagree with your premise on this one. There are ways to deliver the White House message to other countries without appearing to cravenly cater to people who are breaking our nation's immigration laws.
Making bilingualism an official government policy is a horrible idea...just look at the Canadian fiasco that promotes a separatist movement.
There was a stronger argument on behalf of German being an official language in the late 1700s than there is for Spanish today based on the percentage of Americans who spoke German. Yet the Founding Fathers did not grab their ankles in capitulation on the issue...and any protests like we saw this past month would have been met with soldiers on the streets.
"I speak and read Spanish...yet disagree with your premise on this one. There are ways to deliver the White House message to other countries without appearing to cravenly cater to people who are breaking our nation's immigration laws. "
As do I. My point was that the site could be presented in several languages, to help people outside the country have access to it. Having only a Spanish version makes it pretty clear what the goal is.
