WASHINGTON - In a rare occurrence, the CIA fired an officer who acknowledged giving classified information to a reporter, NBC News learned Friday.
The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned.
Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA's inspector general's office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.
The leak pertained to stories on the CIAs rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.
Sources said the CIA believes McCarthy had more than a dozen unauthorized contacts with Priest. Information about subjects other than the prisons may have been leaked as well.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the firing.

The report says Mr. Clintons counterterrorism czar, Richard Clarke, believed that Mr. bin Laden clearly would have access to the VX produced there.
But it also says Mary McCarthy, the national security councils senior director responsible for intelligence, warned Mr. Clintons national security adviser, Sandy Berger we will need much better intelligence on this facility before we seriously consider any options, and that the link between al Shifa and Mr.bin Laden was rather uncertain at this point.

Nothing would surprise me.
Colman McCarthy, a former Washington Post columnist, directs the Center for Teaching Peace, Washington.
And that's just the beginning -- could really deteriorate into a nuclear spin attack: "it all happened in 'this administration,'" I can hear them droning on...
Some progress has been made, said former C.I.A. officer Mary McCarthy. But its evident from the joint inquiry on 9/11 that there were shortcoming. Primarily our intelligence agencies did not collect the right kind of info, did not analyze, what information we had are we safer, my answer is I have no idea, dont know what the parameters of the threat is, threat assessment is still not done.
McCarthy made her remarks Saturday at a conference at New York University Law School entitled Are We Safer? Transformations In Security Since 9/11. The conference came as officials and politicians are debating the most effective way to combat terrorism in the wake of the failure to prevent the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Another CIA activist political hack...
Sandy Bergler got her the job in the Clintoon admin.
If she did it and people died as a result, execute her.
Has the Ivy League been enlarged and moved to the midwest lately?
ewwwww....EWWW!
So, it seems that there's yet another leak going on here, regarding the firing.
I really hope that Porter Goss will get things straightened out at CIA. Heads need to roll. No, not like with the islamofacists... I mean that people need to be fired, prosecuted, and jailed for a very long time.

They are divulging information for which they are not authorized to do so; divulging information about someone busted for divulging information.
I'll add you to the "not ironic" column. hehe.
Good instincts,, was she being "blackmailed" by the Compost?? Just curious.
Or maybe she was paid handsomely by someone (Soros ?) to be an informant for the socialist cause ?
Most people in this field are not naive idealists or political novices trying to score brownie points for some future administration.
Thanks for posting. Thank to all who contribute. New Media BUMP!
Good people are connecting rapidly.
We already know she worked under Bush I.
WHY didn't the Bush administration get rid of ALL of the Clinton people? It never fails to amaze me how trusting the Bushies were and are of the Clinton plants that were holdovers from the former administration.
Anybody agree with me????
