My understanding was that the President of the sponser of that scarilege, the Sam Adams Brewery was in the studio while this was going on. Did the Brewery get absolution for their part so I can buy their ale again?

The contest had couples all over Manhattan and rewarded them for copulating in pre-determined spots with extra points awarded if they could complete acts of sodomy. In addition to St. Patrick's Cathedral other spots included FAO Schwartz childrens' toy store.

What sells the show is they let the humor flow free form. They get funny people on the show and direct them skillfully and covertly. They don't point a mic at someone and say "be funny".
