Qatar is one of our closest mideast allies. We maintain a large air base (Al Udeid Air Force Base) and CENTCOM as well as the Iraqi Studies Group, SOCCENT and ARCENT all operate out of Camp As Saliyah, which is also the R&R desination for soldiers from both Iraq and Afghanistan.
I spent seven months there from August 2003 to April 2004 and was impressed by how westernized it was. Giving a token payment to Hamas-and I do not support that move-does not count for as much as all of the rest of the support in the GWOT they have given as far as I am concerned.

I concur. Qatar is an enlightened oasis in an sea of goat herds. I believe that Qatar's Emir is attempting to create the new Alexandria.
The fact that Cornell is receiving a gift from the emir does not put Cornell's reputation in jeopardy. The university self immolated a long time ago.
