Talked to my son as he waited to embark. Marines patrol! They walk every street, every alley, they poke their noses into shops and watch everything/everybody. Bad guys know if they try to pull any $hit, they will have, in essence, stuck their hand in a meat grinder.
Army guys, I duuno - death before dismount I guess. They drive around a lot. Maybe it works, but compare causality rates in Al Anbar between the Army and Marines.
Foot patrols send a strong message - sort of like staring Death in the face every day at close range....

How about you compare the numbers on the ground of Marines versus Soldiers. Marines are well-trained and tough, but they have the same infantry training we do in the Army.
