Right... I forgot.

You're smart, the President is dumb. Why don't you run in '08?

Please contact all congress people and ask for their attention to China's Lack of human rights and persecution of religious people, not to mention the problems with the Lack of a Free Press.

American support for common sense is critical when it comes to elevating the level of concern on these topics.

Please use the following link for additional information and to contact elected officials.

LOL!! I stand by my statement.

Just give it time. The attitude toward Muslims took months to metastasize.

If I have a guest in my home

I think higher of you than to imagine you would knowingly invite a murderer into your home. Consider this scenario. Say Gore won in '00 and invited Fidel Castro into the White House. If a Cuban exile slipped in and heckled Castro, would you consider him a dingbat? I would consider him a brave individual.

Your attempt at equivalence, again, falls down.

We have trade relations with China. We need China to keep North Korea in check.

We will never influence China if we simply walk away from any contact with its leaders.

I trust 30 years of diplomacy much more than a few hotheads on FR who are rarely right about anything.

Look, you seem like an intelligent guy even though I disagree with you often. That said, your accusation of anti-communist freepers beiing racist is perhaps the most retarded theroy I've ever seen put out here on FR.

You seem like an intelligent guy, too. However, you apparently think it's just dandy for anybody with a grievance against a leader who visits the White House to interrupt that leader when he is responding to the President, thereby embarrassing the President.

My momma taught me manners.

You are correct, I think this is just dandy. Great, in fact. That whole "extremism in the pursuit of liberty" thing. And frankly, as far a Bush being embarrassed, he should be embarrassed for inviting a murderer into his home. Yes, I know Reagan did the same, and I feel he should have been ashamed of himself too.

Human rights is a huge issue of mine. Just this past Wednesday my church hosted a seminar by one of the Lost Boys of Sudan in which he spoke about the genocide and oppresion of Sudanese Christians in very graphic terms. As you can imagine, human rights are especially on my mind this week.

If I recall correctly, you are a Roman Catholic. Please read up on how followers of the Pope are treated in China. It will make you ill.

I know how they're treated. Juvenile antics such as yelling at the President of China won't accomplish a thing, though it might make everybody feel good for a while.

Only engaging the Chinese will have any effect on their policies at home and abroad.

Well, get into government then, and change a diplomatic protocol that goes back decades.

Your issue isn't with Bush, it's with American diplomacy.

Support for all religions in China is important, as documented with Rep Chris Smiths recent hearing.

Smith Hearing Examines Human Rights in China on Eve of President Hu’s Arrival in Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Chris Smith, Chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees Global Human Rights, led a hearing earlier today that examined China’s human rights record – including areas such as China’s compliance with international labor standards, censorship of the internet, implementation of the right of Chinese citizens to worship freely, and the destructive effects on Chinese society of its government’s coercive one-child policy.

"I have eternal hope that President Bush will raise these fundamental human rights concerns in his meetings with President Hu," said Smith.

"The Chinese government simply cannot let their population increasingly experience the freedom to buy, sell and produce while denying them the right to assemble, speak and worship as they choose."

Well, THANK you, polly!

I have a funny feeling that the facts of the matter don't make much difference for this fellow, though.

There are plenty folks around here who think that agreement with them is a requirement for conservatism AND patriotism.

That's what has led to their irrational disdain for our good President. Fortunately, they're easy to spot.

But you're missing my point.

Gorbachev absolutely wanted to be a dictator. The western press has promoted that view, but the truth is that is not what HE wanted. He was a reformer by necessity, not out of moral courage.

He may say differently now, but it is a monumental case of backside covering and revision in an attempt to get part of the credit for the transformation. Otherwise he would be seen by the world as the "looser" of the cold war. Who would want to be known for that?

You make a good point. I am admittedly disapointed that Bush apologized and even more disappointed that he had that scumbag in the White House in the first place, but it is, unfortunately, diplomatic protocol. On the other hand, I'm proud of the brave woman who spoke up, diplomacy be damned. God bless her.

I would guess that President Bush is proud of her too.

She helped make HIS point about the Chinese and religious freedom. He's been working on that for years........witnessing, and boldly calling for freedom for believers.

Don't let a little necessary diplospeak get you down.

"Otherwise he would be seen by the world as the "looser" of the cold war. Who would want to be known for that?"

That is exactly how he is seen in Russia and what he is known for. Gorbachev is massively unpopular in Russia.

"Gorbachev absolutely wanted to be a dictator. The western press has promoted that view, but the truth is that is not what HE wanted. He was a reformer by necessity, not out of moral courage."

Gorbachev had a choice. He could have done what the Mullahs of Iran are doing now and agitated for war. That has traditionally been the last refuge of failed dictators. If they can unite the people against an outside enemy then their people will ignore the economic problems at home.

He chose economic reform instead. That took courage. More courage than doing the expected and trying to hang on to power by any means. That is what most dictators do.
