this is an urban legend that refuses to die..Kerry lost by 120,000 votes, not 60,000
The reasoning with the 60,000 is that if 60,000 people who voted for Bush instead had voted for Kerry, it subtracts 60,000 from Bush's total and adds 60,000 to Kerry's total. Which makes it a tie, then Kerry gets 1 more vote somewhere else to win the state.
My liberal mother-in-law explained to me if just 60,000 voters had voted for Kerry instead of Bush, Kerry would have won....I tried to explain the reality that Kerry lost by 120,000 votes, but I soon realized I was wasting my time...
