Macalester College snuffs pot festival

What was billed as the Twin Cities' "premiere marijuana festival" was nipped in the bud Thursday by Macalester College officials, who believe student organizers were advocating illegal activity rather than cannabis reform. The CHEEBAdanza celebration, which was held last year on campus, was supposed to start today at 4:20 p.m.

"It's not happening," said Doug Stone, a Macalester spokesman. "The publicity was misleading from our standpoint. The impression was that the event was about smoking marijuana and not about advocating for the legalization of, which are two very different things."

For those of you in the Twin Cities area, chances are you know of Macalester's reputation for far-left activism.

I'm amazed that Macalester would even shut down this event from happening. I thought the administration would do one of those "wink-wink, nod-nod" moves when it came to this event.

If your child ever says that they want to go to Macalester, let's just say...you have been fore-warned!

Opinions or comments - anyone?

These kids need to find better alternatives, like binge drinking and gang rape.

We should have waited for this to occur, and then have them all arrested. Make them eat the grass when we cuff them.:) These people have no respect for authority.

Tried. But, No. There were far too many cultural forces assisting him to stay stuck in liberalism.

The double-standard is deafening... how many schools sent students on pro-illegal immigration rallies?

It's a shame that people are so easily manipulated, it's scary when they are related to you.

An acquaintance of mine is an unrepentant limousine liberal. Her youngest child graduated from Macalester 2 or 3 years back (prior to that, I had not heard of the school). I recall her telling me how her daughter & her Macalester peers looked down their noses and made fun of those who flew the American flag in the days immediately following 9/11. This acquaintance thought it was wonderful her daughter had contempt for the ways of those "intellectually beneath her." I found it revolting.

Even this acquaintance and her husband, however, were unprepared to reap what they sowed. They fully expected their youngest daughter to go on to medical school and become a doctor like her father and older sisters. Instead, this obnoxious little leftist became a "nutritional activist" (whatever that is!). After a stint in AmeriCorps, she shows no sign of settling down into any sort of job or location, let alone a respected profession. The kid basically flits from place to place, crashing with friends wherever the wind takes her. This acquaintance and her husband are mortified. I think it's just hilarious!

I used to sell tie-dye shirts across the street from Macalaster, plenty of trustafarians with extra coin for groovy clothing.

Spencer Edelman, a Macalester senior, festival co-founder and charter member of the school's CHEEBA Club (Creating a Harmless Environment to Enjoy Buds Appropriately), says the cancellation cuts into the school's credibility as a home for free speech. "I'm just pretty bummed out," Edelman said in an e-mail. "We had worked so closely with them in planning the event. Nothing we were doing should have crept up on them. I don't know what people are going to do who show up and expect free pig and sweet music and fire dancers, but I'm sure we'll look like jerks."

yep, you look like a bunch of jerks. now what's 'free pig'?
